Vipa
I know this has been done to death but...... FEO out today (friday) my plod usually get the ticket out 2 weeks after visit. I have requested .243 & .308 both for target & both for deer, .243 England up to borders & .308 for sorties into Scotland. Now having second thoughts.... why can't I have one rifle that will do everything? Then I only need to fund 1 piece of glass, one set of re-loading dies etc..... or do I have one 'do-it-all' deer calibre and a dedicated target rifle? I'm starting to think either just go for 1 x 6.5x55 and have done with it or replace the .243 for 6.5x55 which gives huge flexibility deer wise and keep the .308 purely for target. Help..... If I'm going to change my mind I need to do it before 2.30pm today so I can discuss it with Bruce and get my request changed.... Please help me make my mind up! Beardo
i've just put in a variation for 6.5x55 - gonna keep the .223 for foxing
Sprags
6.5X55 is a very good round, as is the 6.5 Nemesis. I use a .243 but mine is an Ackley Improved version, maybe that could be an option!
harv
I would go for both a lighter deer rifle is not the ideal target rifle and vice versa,if you change your mind down the line Bruce and Cleveland police are very good
Vipa
Well, Bruce has been (very, very nice and helpful FEO, we're very lucky in Cleveland) and as it was no hassle at all we have changed my request to a 6.5x55 & a .308. If I find I got it wrong down the line I can always change but think I'm going to be happy with my set up. It also means I don't need to worry about getting the funds together for my .308 until next year. I'm stalking Sika hinds for a week in November up in Scotland and whilst legal, the organisers weren't happy with me taking a .243, the estate apparently prefers the use of something with a bit more umph... so my 6.5x55 will fit that bill nicely! Thanks for the input guys.... now I need some expanding ammunition ideas, both factory and heads for re-loading?
the running man
U should have got a mans gun, 30-06 a hundred year old proven calibre, that's mega flexible on reloading and diversity of quarry! Old ones are the best ones!
Dekers
Whats the problem, stay as you are, you don't have to rush out and buy either straight away. Think it through and if you change your mind a bit down the line just get a variation, if you want to get a one for one it will be free anyway! Old ones are the best ones! The 6.5x55 was designed in 1891, I think that qualifies as an 'old one,' in fact, older than the 30-06! also, I think a 30-06 may be a little hard hitting for a Munty!!! Am going down the 6.5x55 route as it means I can jus buy one rfle this year. Can always make adjustments later!

Paddy Galore!
Hi chap, i was thinking along the same lines not so long back, apparently you can use 7.62 in a 308 so ideal for target. if you're home loading then you can always adjust your recipe and light load for smaller species of deer. However, i've also applied for 6.5x55 for target and deer, mostly on the advice of people on here and my local RFD, We'll have to start up a new club

The only thing that I can find that seems to let down this calibre is that most of the factory ammo (in particular the USA stuff) is under-powered due to the older rifles imported into the US that can't take the bigger loads. You need to chat with njc, he knows quite a bit about them, just because it's under powered doesn't mean it's not as good, the swedish mauser is a very competent calibre and very manageable, all the forestry commission use for deer culling now is 6.5x55. I forget what the max factory loads available are, but they're quite capable of taking down a red.

I forget what the max factory loads available are, but they're quite capable of taking down a red. Apparently there was a big influx of old decommissioned Swedes into the USA. These rifles can't take modern rifle pressures and so, due to the archain US H&S laws, the ammo manufacturers over there only tend to produce quite low powered factory rounds in fear of being sued by some shooter whose 1940s Mauser has blown up Modern barrels can take higher pressures and so home-loading can bring out the calibres real potential! (this is info I have absorbed rather than from experience!)
Beardo
Good choice, not got my variation back yet. Have you decided what rifle to buy?
Vipa
Good choice, not got my variation back yet. Have you decided what rifle to buy? ticket should be here by the end of the week so can't wait! Hi Nick already had a .243 Tikka T3 lite stainless paid for waiting for ticket to arrive so I just called th shop and they have the same rifle in in 6.5x55 so the very nice chap has just taken my name tag off the .243 and put it on the 6555. Still slapping the S&B 8x56 on it along with Sako Optilocks and a Predator 8 mod

Still slapping the S&B 8x56 on it along with Sako Optilocks and a Predator 8 mod I know I keep harping on about it but put the P8 COMPACT on the gun, it has the same baffle stack as the full P8 and there is no difference in sound reduction, but there is an improvement in the gun balance, especially on a T3 Lite as the Butt is hollow and very light! The gun will balance much better, trust me, I did it!! Edited May 3, 2010 by Dekers
Beardo
i'm going for a Steyr Pro Hunter Mountain Mk2, still not 100% sure which mod. Got a Zeiss Diatal Z 8x56 and an S&B Hungarian 8x56 - one of which will end up on it. Edited May 3, 2010 by nickbeardo

Beardo
about £1000 - had a good look at one recently at R&K stockcraft and fell in love with it - pure qaulity, great safety system (rolling disc that can also lock the bolt down) and a great set trigger
