godfather
Hi there, A little info on me then. Recently got back into shooting (actually 20 years have passed since I was a kid).I have a Beretta SP3 and a Ulrika 2 and well chuffed at the opportunity to own them. I currently have a pair of standard Deben electronic ear defenders and would like to upgrade as the interference (hissing) and wind noise is doing my head in. Which one would you recommend Peltor Sport Tac OR MSA Sordin Supreme Pro X. this is my first post so be gentle! thanks
JonnyR
I've got the Sordins so am biased. Ultra clear sound and a waterproof battery compartment to boot. Shop around and you should be able to find them for about £150. Great warranty too - a friend of mine had problems with his after about 18 months and GMK sent him a brand new pair! See if you can try them out beforehand - some people don't like the bulk of the Peltors - bang them on the stock when mounting. ps Welcome to the forum. cheers,
Guest cookoff013
i love the sportac. i got some as soon as they came into the country, i wont shoot without them, you just dont notice they are there !
JonnyR
Ha Ha. Well those 2 posts must have really helped you in reaching a decision!!!
Vipa
I have a pair of Peltor Tactical 6-s so not the sportac although I shoot with a couple of lads who do have the sportacs. I also have a pair of MSA SSP X which are my main set. The MSAs are military spec and built like a tank and therefore feel slightly heavier than the sportacs, the microphones & battery compartment are waterproof, the sound quality is superb, when on and working you will forget you are listening through ear defenders. They do not cut the sound like Peltors, they keep everything at a leve db which is far more natural. Wouldn't trade the SSP Xs for anything exept a pair of Cens Hunters but at £500 plus I think I'll stick with my MSAs!!! Oh... I don't know what it's like with the Sportacs but the battery life with the MSAs is in the hundreds of hours AND you can plug a radio into them!! Beardo
have you considered the Howard Leight Impacts - slim, waterproof and they have a jack input as well, i love mine.
pigglet
I initially went to buy a pair of peltor tacticals but found that both they and the sportacs fouled the comb when mounting a shotgun. I ended up with the sordin spreme pro's and am extremely pleased with them. They feel a bit sturdier than the peltors and are quite a bit slimmer in profile so no comb fouling issues. I find them very comfortable and wear them all day when game shooting. The sound quality is superb and when cranked right up you can hear beaters and pheasants in the woods a looooooooooooong way away. As mentioned there is no noticeable cut off in sound with the MSA's (can't comment ont he peltors as I've not used any in anger) when you pull the trigger. I've had mine a couple of years now and use them for everything from clay shooting and game shooting to DIY. They've been used and abused and stood up to it very well

JT1
I deal with this sort of thing as a part of my job, I use Sportacs, have used them for over a year with the same batteries and the mic pickup amplifies all but the harmful gunshot, so you generally can hear a pidgy coming before you see it, not tried the MSA's, but would say they are both worth going for on their own merits. Just ask an aquaintaince of mine who was a local authority deer manager... he started before there was any real H&S, he now needs pretty substantial hearing aids and is deaf as a post without them.... all down to shooting! Get the ones with the black leather headband, they look better than the camo ones, especially on the game field. cheers,

godfather
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I took delivery of a pair of MSA's this morning. I am very pleased with their fit and they feel solid. I now have a new issue, whilst it will do a great job when I'm shooting, is there anything that will stop SWMBO from saying "how much where those ear defenders!!" in quite a loud voice, nearly 82bd!! Incidently, I managed to get them for £165 inc free delivery. Ordered from Alan Rhone at 3pm yesterday and they arrived this morning. Yep.... Leave 'em in the car!!! out of sight, out of mind and all that.... Plus... don't forget, as per the general rules of the universe which all women must follow.... you are quite within your rights to take the purchase price, divide by 2 and then round down to the nearest £10. So in your case £165 / 2 = £82.50, rounded down you are ok to tell her they cost you 80 quid!!! if it's ok for shoes it's ok for ear defenders!!!
