Went to Cuba last year.

Loved it.

Didn't try the fishing but did drink large quantities of rum. Worth bring back a few bottles (I managed 4) of decent rum as stuff that was a few quid costs many times that back here.

Tour of Havana worth doing, there's a hotel in town with a roof top bar that's great for few mojitos and a cool breeze when it gets too hot.

Great thing about Cuba is that its not a mosquito area so tropical weather without having to take tablets.

Went to Cuba 2 years ago but just to smoke a Cigar (which i never did) the lads have a week each year and we have to have a reason/theme.... found the music in the bars great, there is a big black economy and a lot of poverty. Lots of really old beat up American cars, all the locals car share you will see people flagging lifts and they pay the driver a few pence as thanks... most the folk we met where very nice and plenty had a hand out asking for money which i never really like.......... good experiance but would not be in a hurry to go back..... good luck with the fishing am sure it will be fantastic but expect the guides to tell you how much of a tip they expect :good:

Hi All

I am off to Cuba on hols shortley and was wondering if any of you guys have tried the fishing over there ? any tips, advice aprieciated :good:

Cheers

My advice is to get out of Varadero and on to the Cuban mainland. I cannot say much about fishing except it is good. I went snorkeling off the coast just a few miles North of Varadero and had a fantastic time on the reefs there. Those fish are far too pretty to catch..... enjoy! My favourite country! Cuban fruit is a bit special eat the guava and oranges.

Just got back, fantastic but fishing in Cuba is very expensive and is only available in certain areas usually not where the tourists resorts are.

We were offered a 4 hour sea fishing trip for four people at 474cuc thats about £380.00.

Assume you are going to Varadero, nearest bone fish fishing is at Las Salenias 4 hours away with taxi cost of around £300.00 and fishing with a guide around £200 per day

One word of advice, do not take any credit cards that are connected with any american bank, they will not work. Take stirling or euros and change in your hotel but watch the rates as they change daily. Be prepared to tip for everything even before you are served at a bar or you may have a long hot wait for a drink.

The Mosquitos are there and they bite hard so take plenty of repellant or drink loads of rum as they dont like the taste!!!

Big black market area so any thing you want, get to know your barman as he will supply for cash if you get my meaning.

If you are going all inclusive, do what the Canadians do and take a big ( 1 pint ) insulated mug with you. This you can get filled at the bar on a regular basis.

Have a great time, you will love it.

Not been to Cuba but I have fished in the Carib sea a few times. Early mornings and sun down are the best time if you are fishing from the beach, watch out for bait fish boiling or pelicans diving. I take a shimano Exiage travel rod with a big fixed spool, traces are an absolute must as are the best quality trebles you can afford. Rapala lures work well fished to the sides or under the ball of fish, red heads seem to drive the barras wild. Remember the sun really set it just drops from the sky.

For Tarpon I find a float fished dead bait works, if you land one in ten good skills !

Tight lines

Get yourself to the museum of the revolution - a very interesting 1/2 day in Havana.

I used to run the Malecon most days and the locals used to laugh saying "why run when you can sit!" they gave up after a few months. Don't buy Cigars off the street sellers as they are full of ****. Buy reputable ones or straight from a factory after a tour or just call into one and buy some.

In Old Havana my favourite restaurant is right next to the entrance of the Cathedral - and this is a very good spot for music. Not sure what age you are or if your going alone but it is normal that if you pick up a girl she will charge for sex. This does not mean she is a prostitute. It's just how it works there. I hasten to add that I have not done this!!

There is an wonderful hotel in the corner of Central Park - a beautiful 20's style place - worth a night of old fashioned splendour. I've forgotten the name of it but next to the hotel mentioned above is another modern hotel but it has a great rooftop pool with superb views over Central Park, the national theater and the Capitolio. A great place for views and some cocktails!

Enjoy!
