hendersons
Hi all i've been asked by somebody to snare some rabbits on a few fields. I have never used snares before so I was wondering does anybody have any advice or reccomend a good book. The fields would be dangerous to shoot on because of no backstops apart form a motorway or some houses. The field is also deer fenced all the way round with no foot paths or easy access so shouldn't be any chance of hurting anybodys dog or deer thanks for the advice nick
GatGun
Dont use shop bought snares. They are pants. Either buy some or make your own. Three strand brass wire is the norm for rabbits and they work on the fences or on tealers which you can also make yourself. If the fence can be snared then that is one way,or you may be able to locate the runs on the field and place snares over them. Check your snares regulary, at least twice a day but preferably more, and use stops and breakaway clips if there is the slightest chance of cats or non target species getting caught accidentally. The stops will ensure quarry doesent die of asphixiation and the clips will allow other species to rid themselves of the snares. They are great for rabbits ,but you have to make sure they are set correctly to catch effectively, and to try and minimise the risk of other species getting caught in them. Learning which part / height of the fence they are coming through, or learning to identify the runs / beats etc will all be part and parcel of snaring. Good luck

bruno22rf
Shop bought snares are o.k. if you leave them outside to weather for a few weeks but they are so easy to make yourself that its not really worth buying them.Set the bottom of the loop about 2 inches from the ground on the most prominent runs and secure them to the fence if possible. If you run out of snares then you can pee on the remaining runs to make buggsy less keen to use them.
