SSS
I have a Millett 6-25x56 parrallax adjustable scope on my .222, a hawke sport HD 3-9x50 on my .22lr, and also I have a tasco 2.5-10x42 which I got given as a spare. This evening, I have been comparing the quality of the cheap and nasty tasco and hawke, to the millett. I know this time of day is a good test for any scope, but I have discovered something. The free tasco has the clearest image now, but during the day, the Millett comes into its own. Its just ashame the reticule is so thin on the tasco, because I would put it on my lr. Does anyone know why the tasco is clearer than the more costly Millett?

Westcountryman
Alot of variables. Lens aren't always the same when they come of the production line. You may be lucky and have a very good one. Scope price doesn't always reflect quality. My Nikko Stirling Platnum is fantastic and better than any of the other mid price scopes I've tried, many of which cost a fair bit more. The millet (i've never used one of these) probably cost a bit more because its a big scope. Lots of glass, tube etc. This doesn't always mean it will be better optically than the smaller, cheaper tasco.
Paddy Galore!
Early tascos were quite good imo, obviously later on when cost of production rose, the quality took a dive.
Dekers
There is a lot more to scope quality than JUST the lens...for example I rate JSR own brand scopes exceptionally good glass quality for the money but EVERYTHING else lets them down! badshot
I too had a shock with a JSR scope. £65 new, it came on the .22lr I just got. It embarrasses my hawke frontier badly, the JSR is only just behind it in clarity. I don't like the allen key locked turrets but apart from that it is good. I am contemplating putting it on the lr and selling the hawke!

I put up with it because the glass is good (for the money)! Edited June 10, 2010 by Dekers
