Got a text from the brother about 4am saying he had seen a huge looking buck on ground next to his,and asked if it was some of my land.It was,so i went oot this evening about 7,although it was blowing a gale and was about minus 20 with the wind chill, and im only exaggerating a wee bit.Went in with a bottle of malt and a bit of venison to the folks as i havent spoke to them for a while.I usually get 3-4 bucks off the place, but although its got a cracking valley running approx 600 yards with great cover and plenty trees about i havent actually walked it for about 4 years.I parked up and set off at the opposite end of the valley, and spotting anything is impossible in places due to the steepness and the cover. Its a case of maybe walking 50 yards and then having a look where the cover is not so thick.I had only gone about 100 yards and looked over the edge and unbelievably there was the bright orange of a roe.The bit was near vertical and at only 40 yards no need for the glasses to see he was a buck.I set the sticks up but had to wait ages for the right shot.It eventually presented so i took the shot which gave a satifying thump, and i saw him run to the right.I gave him 5 mins and then scrambled down the bank to where he was standing, but saw no blood.I walked in the direction i thought he had taken off and worked Rab for about 100 yards but all he was interested in was a hen phez with chicks,so i went back to the shot and put Rab out.He went straight to where we had came down the bank, and i could see his tail(stump) wagging and i thought he must be sniffing down a rabbit hole.I called him in,and put him out again and he went straight back to the same place and started pulling a roe leg.I walked up and sure enough there was the buck lying dead.I followed the blood and after the shot, the buck had run up the bank to within 10 yards of us,and then keeled over and rolled back down into some whins.Couldnt believe i had missed him on the way down as we had passed within 3 yards with masses of claret, but with the cover it just shows you.Nice enough heed but dissapointed too as i was half expecting a huge rack.Seems a very old lad with huge sloping coronets, and although not weighed yet he seems around the 20kg.I walked the rest of the valley and sat till dark but only a doe was cutting about.

Took the pics of the buzzard nest about 100 yards from the buck. Not often you can look down on the nest, and you can see 2 balls of fluff chicks.

Well done dave.

I've seen 2 bucks this year that had really dense antler. If you looked at one you would guess it would make a bronze, possibly Silver, but when you look at the weight it will easily make a gold. In my area there are certain patches of land that regularly produce dense antler on most of the bucks from there, mostly in the coal rich areas.

Cheers,

Mark.

Cheers Mark. The denser ones usually have that shiny appearance on them, and with me they are usually very old beasts.I have a bronze the old fella shot,a five pointer, antlers about 7 inches long and with a short cut.You wouldnt believe it looking at it that it was a medal.Thursdays one is a silver in size, but with its weight will be lucky to make a bronze.I will toast them for a week and then score them to get an idea. Will be interesting to see the volume on them both.Probably end up on fleabay.
