kdubya
Can someone with experience give me some insight into these guns ie capability and accuracy I am after a doing some longer range rabbiting and quite fancy the apparent flat shooting and (so I am told) reduced richochet properties of the .17 I appreciate the extra cost of ammo but rather fancy one? my land is cleared to .243 so should assume a variation should not be a problem? or will it? cheers KW

Down South
I've just started using a.17 hmr to backup my .22 lr. You very quickly find that its no ordinary rimfire. I use 20gr hollow points and its devastating out to over 100 yards. When I get a better zero and more confidence I can see that this is just close range stuff. Expensive yes but I'm finding its a 1 shot solution. Its not going to replace my .22 because out to 65 yds thats still good enough but i can see every thing from that range out to 175yds is going to be plain shooting. If you can hold it steady enough you can hit it. I'm impressed! Noisy yes, but worth it IMO. DS

Down South
Mark, I'm getting some 17 gr v max this week, The stuff I want to shoot with it is unedible or too old and crafty to be edible. I've got clearance for a mod but I'm going to see how I get on without it. Local gun dealer says that most of his serious .17 users don't use a mod. hawkeye
One day this summer i was laid on the edge of a wood watching some rabbits in the next field. I had my HMR with me they were playing together between 140 & 150 yards away there was 5 of them i shot 3 one after another the noise did not seem to bother them that far away. Up close they do seem loud but down range did not seem to matter. The first 2 just dropped not a twitch the third one jumped and the rest bolted if that ****** had just dropped i could have got all 5 with a bit of luck. But 3 out of 5 is not bad . Down South
I've got a corvid problem on part of our shoot which I can't deal with at the moment. Come Feb, I shall use some of the ideas from another listing and see if I can clear them at range. Back in the summer I was trying out an old sbs that I was going to buy. As I was approaching the corner of a wheat field a family of crows got up and I managed to nail one. It was stone dead in the wheat but the rest of the family just circled while I knocked them down 1 at a time, I was stood in full view. The noise doesn't bother them if you can hold their attention else where.

The difference between my 17 with a mod and without a mod is massive, wqith a mod it sounds like a high velocity .22lr round without a mod it sounds like a cannon. get a mod mate, cant think of any reason not to. pete

kip270
Down South, How are you getting on with the sako .17hmr?
Down South
Hi kip, I'm doing alright with it thanks. Not been out as much as I would like but very effective. A bonus is that its light to carry on a sling. I take it now when I do my rounds on the shoot, naturally I'm not seeing much to shoot ( **** law) but when you have half a bag of wheat with you the weight is an important factor. I've already decided to to shift my 10/22 and get the .22 lr barrel in the new year. I won't get serious with the rifle until the game season is over. DS. kip270
Good news mate. Thinking about getting a .17hmr myself. Since i moved to scotland they changed my conditions for my .222. When i lived in wales i could shoot vermin (a few crows went PUFF) and fox, but now living in Scotland i can only use it for Deer and fox. So the .17hmr would fill that gap. Maybe after my Hols i will look into it, Cheers Mate It is a thousand times better to have common sense without education than to have education without common sense

kip270
A bit OTT i know, but when i get my .17 i will be using my T8 reflex on it Snowflakes are one of nature’s most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together.
