spots on a rabbits liver

Recommended Posts

I went out this morning and shot 6 rabbits which I have just cleaned and are soaking in water. the 2 young ones that I shot had wierd looking livers, one had kind of spots on it, looked as though he had been a heavy drinker and the other one seemed to have a bloody growth in its liver. Are they ok to eat? I was planning on taking them up the pub and getting the chef to bbq them whilst we watch the football.

Cheers for your help fellas.

Personally I would not eat the one with the growth on it's liver as you haven't got a clue what caused it. As for the one with spots on the liver this can be caused by several things - It might well be perfectly safe to eat but I would still err on the safe side and give it to the ferrets or use it at a Foxes Baiting Station!

Get a couple of pounds of Jumbo Sausages and a large box of Burgers to put on the BBQ for the match!

I dont see any percentage in eating these rabbits if you think that there may be something wrong with them . I have buried tons of fresh meat over the years that didnt look or smell right , including deer . Get rid of it and shoot some more .

Harnser .

The spots on the liver sound like Liver fluke, I wouldn't eat the meat or give the liver to ferrets personally.

The "growth" you mention could be the gall bladder, looks like a little sac set within the liver, the sac can vary in colour (some look like a rabbit dropping) but you should nip it where it joins the liver and pull it out if you intend eating the liver as it's very bitter tasting.
