Why does my sound mod smell of ammonia?

Recommended Posts

I wanted to see what my Wildcat mod looks like on the 22-250 and after taking of the PES I was looking at the state of the baffles and reflex bit, when I got a bit of a whiff of ammonia (there's no mistaking the smell!)

It's not a full on smell, just an underlying one which I can clearly make out. Does anyone know why this is, as I really didn't expect ammonia to be made in the burning of nitrocellulose powder.

Taken from another site 'Nitrocellulose (also: cellulose nitrate, flash paper) is a highly flammable compound formed by nitrating cellulose through exposure to nitric acid or another powerful nitrating agent'

That probably explains it enough, ammonia is nitrogen and hydrogen, and oxidised would give you a nitrate of nitric acid
