I can't help but feel that 24" may be OK on skeet, maybe even an advantage (perhaps) but wouldn't be much use for anything else. Don't know about the price but if you find that it's an absolute bargain, it may be worth pricing a spare barrel
Breastman
IMO barrel length only really affects the swing/movement of the gun. I find i swing more smoothly but slower with a longer gun, and the opposite with a shorter gun. So i have a 30" barrelled O/U for clays when you know the flight path of your target and repeating the same movement over and over is a big factor. Likewise i have a 24" barrelled gun (M2) for pigeon shooting and PSG when getting the gun on a different target each time as fast as possible is a major factor You can compensate for any perceived patterning deficiencies using chokes and/or cartridges. BTW The M2 is an excellent gun. I'd see if you can find out what the gun has previously been used for as if its PSG its likely to have done ALOT of miles so you'll need to give it a good checking over. Saying that i'm yet to hear of anyone wearing one out Mark Edited July 13, 2010 by Breastman
Cosd
personally I wouldn't entertain a 24" barrel, I used to shoot a 26" but found that it lost out to the longer birds, I now shoot 28" and figure that to be the best all rounder. Don't know about the price but if you find that it's an absolute bargain, it may be worth pricing a spare barrel I thought barrel length doesn't affect distance of shot travel as the gunpowder inside a cartridge is totally burnt out in the first 13" of travel within the barrel! What it would affect though is the pattern which can be compensated as said already with choke and cartridge type. Personally I think the 24" barrels maybe a bit too whippy, but bear in mind that a general rule of thumb is that due to the longer action on a semi auto, the gun's overall length is 2" longer than say an O/U; So a 24" semi would be the same length as say a 26" O/U. Why not try the gun first and see how it suits you?
Paddy Galore!
I had an M3 with a 24" barrel, didn't encounter any problems on long birds other than i'm a poor shot the action is going to add on 3" to the barrel length anyway, and it's the choke that affects range not barrel length. Daveo26
If your going for an FAC one think about how much weight it will be carrying with 8 carts in the mag. It would be like the equivalent weight of a 30" o/u (maybe) I used a 24" m1 and it shot just fine once I got used to how "fast" it was.
