red_stag88
Hi, I am reletivley new to surface fishing lures other than my trusty frog. So today i sent off for; a small jitterbug (silver perch), rebel buzzin' frog (erm frog colour) and a mouse (weedless and sort of a tigered colour). These i was recommended for pike and my fav perch, what do you use? Also have you got any good stories? I got my friend hooked by getting him to catch a 3lb chub on a mepps tandem trout! It was freezing day and the only fish all weekend but we both enjoyed it
Cranfield
I have had no success catching perch on surface lures, but I have done well with pike. The takes can be very explosive. The main advantage is that you can fish surface lures, over weed beds and around lily pads, where you would get snagged up, if you used a sinking lure. Its important to vary the retrieve and with practise, you can zig-zag your lure. Pause the retrieve frequently, most strikes will come when the lure is stationary. I use the "Top-Dog" range, which I bought in the US, but anything will work on the right day.
paul collins
for seatrout at night i will use a wake lure on a black night and the takes are frightening ....same principle as the frog or mouse for predator fish even chub... new to the flock
Two of my favourite baits for surface fishing pike are the old but trusted Jitter Bug and the reletively new Buzz Baits. The buzz bait is a safty pin spinner with a large propeller, which runs across the surface with a quick retrieve. Fabulous action when a 42inch pike comes for a snack. supergame
I notice Cranfield hadn't had a perch on a surface lure. I would agree that they don't normally take surface lures. I did once manage a perch of 1lb 8oz on a lucky 13 in fire tiger. This was during a trip to a lakeland tarn which was having a mental day and every fish, pike included was feeding furiously. I'll never forget watching the poor hapless toads getting snapped of the surface, and if you didn't see them dissapear you certainly heard them. I'll be fishing that tarn soon with lures just as the pike are thinking of spawning. The sport is usually electric. I'll be taking the fly rod and fishing some big surface froggy flies or anything that creates a wake.
