Game shooting

Until now i have only shot clays, I would like to try game and may get chance later this year a friends farther in law has a shoot, but looking around i can't get my head round the pricing seen everything from £28 per bird to £1350 a day?!?!?!..... can some one explain how it works for me please I don't want to book something and then not be able to afford it, I also understand there is an Etiquette to a game shoot which requires tips to be paid, I don't want to bite off more than i can chew..... so can somebody explain how a day like below would pan out and the total likely costs?

Quarry Pheasant

Guns (Available) 8 (8)

Bag 200

Cost £800.00

Distance N/A

Lunch Provided

Cartridges Fibre Wadded

Drives 5

Dogs Welcomed and encouraged

Overage £32 with no VAT applicable

Transport Provided in bespoke Estate trailer

A full day of 200 birds, using all the main woods and including coffee, mid-morning snack, lunch and tea in the family house. Birds will be challenging even this early and the glorious location will ensure a special day

Also is it necessary to wear tweed?

Thanks

To use your example

8 guns all paying £800 = £6,400

£6400 divided by the total amount of birds = £32 which I would say is about accurate.

Most driven days I attend are 100 bird totals at £30 per bird, total then payable £3000 between 10 guns £300 each.

As for the tip, £20 per 100 is about right unless you feel you have had a great day then you can tip more

Edited to ad

The exclusive, high bird shoots eg whitfield, clovelly etc generally charge more per bird but you might find the cost of the day is high because its a 400 birder for example

OK i didn't know if it was £800 for 8 guns i.e. £100 each and then £30 per bird shot or something as it gets advertised differently everywhere.... but at those sorts of prices I don't think I'll be doing much game shooting anytime soon!

You can find more reasonable shooting and I would say it is a great day out, we do not shoot at home as it is all sold, so we tend to buy days out and have a roaming syndicate.

We tend to buy days between 50 and 100 birds and pay between £150 and £250ish.

The thing is, it is not all about the shooting with our team, we always go to breakfast on the way and always stop for dinner on the way home, a days shooting and plenty of ale with your friends, I look forward to it all year!:good::lol:

NOw that sounds like a better option, and something too look forward to £100-£150 is more my budget! Was i naive to think that £800 was between 8 rather than each!

Hi mate

I am in the same boat as you as i have only shot clays and vermin up until now,

We have booked into a shoot that was advertised on here on the 22nd october and paid £135 for a 60 bird walk one/stand one day.

I thought this was good value and we managed to book in as single guns rather than having to book in in teams.

If your interested i think there are still a few places left, its advertised in the shooting available section by Dan the gun.

All the best

Also have a look for some small DIY shoots

You have to do some work parties etc but its good fun meeting other guys and great to be able to work the dogs.

Last season I paid £300 shot about 10 pheasants over the 8 shoot days but enjoyed working the dogs etc also, so i thought it was good and im doing the same again this season.

Other then that get and do some beating and earn yourself a days shooting on beaters day, which im also hoping todo this season if the shoot dates dont clash

A days shooting is all about the banter, being in the countryside and a bit of shooting as well.

Every year myself and some old friends from back home take a few driven days. Full english in a pub to begin. 50 - 60 birds between 6 or 8 of us then a meal and 10 pints!!!

Brilliant days. I dont think they would be any better if we were shooting 500 birds rather than 50!!

I think I will try and find some beating this season, I don't have a dog at the moment but hoping to get one soon (need to move and buy a house first...) coming from a none shooting back ground and living in a city it isnt easy to find information on, except online, hopefully i blag a day at my mates father in laws later in the year.

Couldn't agree more, especially if you are just starting out. It's all about the craic and not about the numbers. Also I don't want to seem patronisig but if you have not shot game before you might not hit many - it is very different to clays.

Unless you are proper minted I find the cheapest way to shoot regularly, apart from Pigeons, is to join a syndicate. I shoot 8 days a season, 50ish bird days for about £800 all in, so about £100 a day per gun per day. There are 8 of us and it is a great day, each one making lunch for the whole crew, beaters included on one of the 8 days. Plenty of sloe gin and fizz, usually a bbq or stew and a good cigar to round off the day. What could be better?

cheers,

can i clarify is that 50 birds between the 8 each time out? Sounds ideal and fun, I wouldn't want to commit to £800 until i had tried it a few times but that does seem much better than £800 for a day!

How does Marlborough sound, 1500acres and the deal is 7 shoots for £700...£100 a time.

Sounds good but as above would like to try it before committing also cannot guarantee i can be free on certain days....

There are places that advertise 50 bird 8 guns etc 800 all told

but they normally charge the earth if you go over, like 32 quid

on all extra birds,so youve got to know who your shooting with

if 2or3 of your mates go beserick on the day you can soon up

the bill, and never let the shoot introduce a couple of "late bookers"

on your day who will split the bill with your team, guaranteed theyll

be the best shots in the world and youll have another 50 or 60

to pay for on top,it happens.

Sorry, I would love to offer but we have a full quota of guns. I was just trying to say it would be worth you trying to explore this as an option! Apologies for any misunderstanding.

I could be up for this next season as the syndicate i'm in is finishing after 30 years! (the land has been sold and is being broken up into parcals of land)
