Magnetizer
Does anybody know anything about feeding-up an area in order to encourage vast numbers of pigeons. Its not big and its not sporting but I want to know how its done and what crops are best for this. Anyone have any ideas?
Yorkshire Pudding
3 tons of barley or wheat .Or even a barley/wheat mix , should do the trick. When ever we leave the grain store doors open there are always plenty of pigeons willing to go into the grain store. all the best yis yp
Tony
There you go then. Build a decoy grain store and your away!

supergame
Mag, it was me that started the original post. Touchy subject with some people. No different to feeding a splash for mallard and teal in my eyes. Stacks of pigeon shooters do it, but they keep quiet about it. You will probably get some consistent sport from a baited field, but the same rules of decoying and hide positioning in relation to wind etc still apply and of course you will still have to hit them. A stubble field fed with wheat, maize or beans is your best bet. Its up to you how much you put down. This will obviously determine how many birds you can hold at your field until you shoot it. The more you shoot the field the more wary the birds will become, just the same as any other pigeon shooting situation.

Deako
Not unless you want to lose the shooting rights...The farmer would be most unimpressed...also, why would you need to feed in swathed rape?...woodies love that stuff more than anything! Cranfield
weasel, you could only feed over ground that has no "value" to the farmer, like stubbles, grassland etc. I don,t think he would be impressed, if you attracted pigeons to his crops by feeding them. Buzzer
I have never baited a feild, if i was to do that on any of the fields that i shoot i would be out on my ear! as i work on a large est i can keep an eye on what the birds are doing. Farmers dont want volunteers growing on their ground thats why they spay, these days the grain merchants wont buy the grain if its not pure, eg anouther variety of wheat or barley growing with what was sown. ernyha
:*) Weasel what would you plan on using as bait on swathed rape as I couldn,t think of a better bait than rape seed anyway. Also if you need bait on swathed rape mate, you are doing something wrong. =(
supergame
The only field I have baited was a stubble. As regards my bait germinating in the spring in the farmers crop its highly unlikely as the pigeons dont miss a bit when there feeding hard. You have got to be careful not to over feed the chosen area to prevent the risk of mixing. I must add that I dont always bait, only on one field during the winter months as this is when my pigeon shooting is most limited. The farmer is a good mate and has no problem with me doing so as the wheat he grows is for his pig feed only. In recent years baiting has become a very popular method of getting a bit of shooting. Baiting seems to have grown in popularity since the demise of winter rape in my area. As I have already mentioned it is up to the shooter how far he takes it and how many birds he shoots. My best bag over a baited area is 103. I have found it no more successful than shooting any other field that pigeons are feeding on.
