Doggone
why are some rounds known as NATO rounds? cheers john boy They are almost identical to the sporting .223 round but create higher pressures. Used by the armed forces, 5.56mm The .308 sporting round is also the same as the 7.62mm Nato round Andy
Newsportshooter
why are some rounds known as NATO rounds? cheers john boy North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - Ie they're Military spec rounds For example .223 Rem (comercial round) becomes 5.56mmx45 (NATO),and .308 is 7.62mm x 51 NATO. Issues can arrise from throat lengths of some rifles which are incompatible with mitlitary rounds. Also most (if not all) NATO rounds will be full metal jacket as expanding ammo is outlawed against humans (by legislation - geneva convention etc)

J@mes
probably before the geneva convention was drawn up!
fortune82
I think expanding rounds were available at the start of WW1 then outlawed during the war. The UK troops then used rounds with a solid nose but cavity within the round filled with sawdust which caused the bullet to deform and tumble. I was out on the battlefields a few weeks ago and found some of these!
Dekers
NATO rounds are military and have the circle/cross motif on the base, they are not the same as civil ammo, "equivalents", ie .223/5.66 or .308/7.62. Refer to..... http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/ind...showtopic=17856 Edited August 14, 2010 by Dekers
