Gunk in the chequering

Hi all,

I've got a little 'project' single barrel 12b which I'm stripping down, cleaning up and re-blueing for my eldest to use.

I've removed all the varnish and sanded the stock and fore-end down, but I'm reluctant to sand down the chequering.

Any ideas what I can use to get the built up gunk out of the chequering?

Thanks all

Danny

When I cleaned my beretta up after the stock refinish I just went at it with the hardest brisle toothbrush I could find, I avoided any cleaning agents becuase I had already put a finish on the wood and didn't want to damage it, but a bit of warm water, mild soap and elbow grease should shift any grime and not harm the wood.

If it's not too bad first try an old toothbrush & stock conditioning oil, brush along the chequering grooves. This won't harm anything.

If that doesn't work you can progress to stiffer - even a wire brush (VERY gently) but be careful or you will remove the top of the chequering - thats not what you want!.

I prefer to run a v shaped scraper or a chequering tool very carefully along the grooves to loosen the hard stuff, then go back to the toothbrush.

It's amazingly easy to slip with any tool & damage the stock.

I would only use nitromors or other chemicals as a very last resort and then only when I intend to completely refinish the stock.
