al4x
I don't check every case as I am not that sad or bothered. As long as the rabbit is dead I really couldn't care about the case. and finally the voice of reason, I only really check when I clear them out of the footwell of the truck or from the air vents, or the pickup bed or anywhere else they tend to get found after a decent night out. deputy dog
My cases out of my CZ never even look that dirty, let alone split. All you ever see on mine is a little soot around the neck. However I don't check every case as I am not that sad or bothered. As long as the rabbit is dead I really couldn't care about the case. Mc i'm not that sad either. Infact quite the opposite of it. I only noticed those cracks i posted about while i was fiddling around with spent cases i had in my works jacket pocket i forgot to throw out. Otherwise i'm like most others, Shoot and disguard or pick up an throw out. I asked for advice on this matter purely for safety reasons on behalf of myself. As i wasn't sure to keep shooting the remainder of the batch i have left for fear of either harming the gun or more importantly myself. Which in the end does bother me if i think i could do harm to myself by using duff ammo when i shouldn't be. ATB DD
Dekers
Thanks Dekers mate. That link was pretty helpfull. It stated that the round is still safe to use if the splits are not major in any way. And that the pressure is so low that it cant harm the breech or loading area. I'll just keep an eye on the last 100 i got from the batch and when i use them up, i'll buy a box or 2 of new bullets and watch for cracks on them. But according to that link i just read .17hmr ammo has always had certain problems with case splits around the neck area. Due to the way their manufactured and the strains on the brass tolerances around the neck areas. But in your honest opinion would you still use them. Over the years I have had a number split, I could not put a figure on it but a good few, I still use it!

Dekers
Just an aside..... I suspect many more people may have had this issue but have simply never noticed. Who examines every spent case...ok some may...but many also hit the deck never to be seen again despite our best efforts (always wondered how that can happen, you eject, watch it fall, go to pick it up and it has dissapeared)....anyway... I only ever noticed my first when playing with a couple of spent carts in my pocket one cold evening trying to keep warm, I felt the split. Probably had a lot more than I have noticed since (and before)!
