adam f
A new farm Ive just picked up is dairy, and as a result is mainly pasture. There are a couple of maize crops but these havent been cut yet. On my first recce this morning I located 3 good sitty trees and a couple of strong flight lines across a pair of grazing fields. Will the piddies decoying over this or does there need to be a reason for them to drop in and feed? Is it worth a bash?
TJ91
worth sticking sum decoys out in a long line infront of you, pretty much straight line with the 'coys about 3 feet apart, 2 lines would be better, a line to each side going straight away from you with lines about 15-20 yards apart (hope you can make sense of that!) pigeons will fly straight over the decoys and follow the line..straight up to the waiting gun read it somewhere and i have tried it a few times with some good bags! You don`t need to decoy if you have good flightlines as you will get some spectacular shooting from a flightline That said I saw 17 woodpigeon on grass this morning, 50yds from the back of some houses so if there is a fair amount of clover it may be worth a bash. Guest CraigBenson
It's worth a punt. I've had them come in to grass on an airfield that I used to shoot over.
AlistairB
Talk to Bakerboy, he regularly decoys over grass. AB
bakerboy
Talk to Bakerboy, he regularly decoys over grass. AB If you have good flight lines, you just need to lay out 2 good lines of decoys. I use 10 in each line spreading back 35 yards from the hide, with each line about 20 yards apart,(killing zone) and the decoys about 2 yards apart, the hide approx, 15 yards in front of the pattern. The birds should come straight to you, try and make the decoys into a funnel but keep the front open for the means to escape. This is the traditional and well tested horseshoe pattern, but with a slightly more open end, where the birds will fly in. Good luck and good shooting. bakerboy Terry Edited October 18, 2010 by bakerboy
stubby
one of my permissions is a sheep farm, all grass areas, but under flightlines, the pigeons still come down in numbers for either clover or the piles of sheep muck in the corner, I normally just stick 6 shells deeks down and get them down in one's and two's all day long
adam f
Thanks all some excellent advice as usual! The flight lines are strong but didnt seem tight and low enough to shoot many on the flight line - saying that it was windy today and I wasnt hidden, so quite a few veered off slightly.. I'll give it a whirl on Sat and let you know how I get on!
