DIY blacking

had a very good price for having my barrels blacked professionally, and local to me, but timescale etc is a pain.

out of interest I started searching online and looking at blacking kits, has anyone ever tried this, and what sort of results did you get?

was it hard, I assume that I will have to take the barrels back to bare steel?

Im not after a mint perfect finish, just a black finish that will offer protection to the barrels, its worn through in a few places on mine, and would like to tart them up a bit :good:

I really wanted the barrels in a silver finish but that doesnt appear to be very easy to obtain.

if you have a good price for a pro doing it then let them do it, re blu-ing barrels is no easy task

i tryd it once...never again...what a mess and huge regret!!

no doubt many will have done it and made a good job but things like that i will leave to the pros

Yep, +1. I think you're talking about where I was earlier today and I have a sneaky feeling that they may well do a decent job. I've left my AYA for blueing and for the chequering to be recut. Yep, again, the timescale is a problem but probably worth it in the long run.

Cheers

the blacker is just up the road to me in Barnstaple, hes off on holiday for a week, then its about 3 weeks apparantly, my problem is that not having the gun for near on a month means I miss a couple of shoots and dont get to go for some coaching with my own gun as soon as I would like

going to try the DIY approach as I have nothing to lose

then the plan is, if the DIY method isnt any good, to drop them in for blacking before the christmas holiday period as Im away and got a lot of commitments on over that period, will have less of an impact on me time wise

the work quality is superb they did a custom LBP barrel for my work that we made, so I would like them done properly, eventually :good: the rest of the gun deserves it, and as I cant afford to replace it that easily, I expect I will have to keep it for a few years to come
