UKPoacher
What do you mean by 'range'? A pellet retaining sufficient energy to kill? If so, that depends on quarry, cartridge and pellet. Effective killing range? If so, that depends on quarry, cartridge, pellet and choke. A pellet may retain enough energy to kill long beyond the pattern being tight enough to guarantee consistent results. For general rough shooting using conventional pellets and chokes then 25yds to 40yds would be ideal for me.
jpbud1
Thanks all, general concensus being out to forty yards will do for me,i did as you say clive mean effective "killing" range but was unsure to put the word in!i also will have to factor in being a not so good shot, and take my shots wisley. Isn't 28gr exactly the same on lead as 32gr?? Thats just the charge of powder and velocity of the shot. If your shooting pigeons and crows using something like 32gram 5's anything out to 45 yards is fairly easy to achieve depending on what the target is doing. If a crow has flown over your head or youve shot one and the others are flying directly away you can hit them at long range 'right at target'. A fast crosser at that range is another proposition. Its a combo of target, choke and shell selection but I'd take on a 45 yarder with full chokes and be confident of a hit if it was a relatively static target! I used to shoot with my clay gun using the same chokes I used for clays and that range could be as much as half of that easily for an 'effective kill'
