Fox trap trigger. Treadle or bait pull?

Recommended Posts

I've got my Fox trap nearly made and now I need to make the trigger mechanism. I've made a basic trigger to tie a bait to but am wondering if I'd be better off making a treadle instead? I'm thinking a bait pull would reduce the number of false trips by cats etc but would also be tougher for the Fox to trigger as they will have to confidently grab the bait to be caught?

What release do you guys use on yours and why?

That's exactly what I was thinking. It wouldn't be hard to make a treadle with the latch I have now. I'd just tie the pull cord to the treadle instead of the bait. The main advantage I can see of doing it that way is that I wouldn't have to use a solid bait. Just something that stinks (vixen urine is supposed to work well but never tried it).

I think I've got the door system sorted. I attatched one of those snap latches you put on gates so when it closes it locks itself shut from the outside.

same as that the treadle all day .i had a client ring me up he had bought a trap the kind you Tye the bait to to release the door he had caught the cub in the night so he was in there all night before he rang me when i arrived the cub was badly tangled up on the ruining wire with his leg exposed out throu the top of the trap hanging up side down his leg was missing from we say the knee down freshly taken ? it must of been a agonising for him 1 shot for the cub and a mouth full to the owner .the traps i use have a rod attached to the treadle and then is run up the inside of the trap uncased in mesh so not to get them damaged and also prevent the fox from hurting its self while in the trap .

it depends on the way you tie the bait. if you put a scissor bar down the back of the trap with bait tied to the bar and then middle of bar hinged to roof of trap and then wire running from top of scissors to the trigger then you should not have a problem with fox hanging its self. i had a scissor trigger trap for years and never had a problem. i did how ever have a trap with tread plate and one leave ginger could get the bait out with out tripping the plate. got over it by lowering the roof so fox couldn't jump over but i like big trap with nothing to spook the fox.

NJC.. have you finished making that trap yet of is it now a spring project.
