Hearing protection?

Recommended Posts

I never used to bother with earplugs, until I started getting severe headache's & neck & shoulder pain after shooting. Now I use earplugs all the time. I use the ones that allow you to hear, until you pull the trigger...............a very good investment at a tenner!

I have a pair of Beretta electronics jobbies but I think they are Napiers in disguise! I have had them for about 5 years and they are spot on.

That reminds me, I could do witha new set of foam inserts.

I use them religiously for clays and for pigeon in the summer. During the winter months I tend to have my balaclava/hood up to keep warm so the shot is muffled. They don't always agree with certain types of headgear.

I forgot to pack them on a pigeon shoot a few months ago. Needless to say I ended up shooting about 200 shells. My ears were ringing for a week!  :D

Dave you should definatly use somthing,i never used to wear any earprotection either and i think my left ear is a bit dodgy now because of it and i'm only 26.Like you what put me off was not being able to hear things around you (as you say when roost shooting every bit of warning helps!)and just not hearing general things around you can feel a bit strange,i used to start with the best of intentions but after  an hour and a few missed shots the ear plugs/defenders would end up in the bag.The electronic ones are brillant you can adjust the volume to a natural level and its as if your not wearing them as soon as the gun goes off they cut out the blast and then fade back to a normal level.I've seen some people with the earplug ones that apparently do a similar thing but i've never tried them(not very hygenic to use someone elses  )

I've used the cheap, foam inserts and also a pair of ex military ear defenders. They both work well and are cheap to buy. With the ear defenders, you can hear perfectly normally, ie pigeons wing beats etc, if you slide one side slightly off your ear. Then of course you have to nudge it back into place just before you shoot. They cost £5 from surplus stores........ but I think the expense is worth it.
