kent
On wind swapping pellet is as likely to change your results as swapping calibre. You can play with theory a lot here on balistic programs but whatever pellet it must shoot well in your gun
tsg
Hi guys, I read the thread with curiosity specially penetration argument... You need about 4ft-lb to pierce a rabbit's skull, so both calibres could easily do the job at 50 yards for a 11 ftlb airgun (even further, if you can hit the thing). IMHO, body shots are not the right way of hunting. I found .177 easier for pigeons head shots. I'm shooting .177 only now as the flatter trajectory makes ME more accurate. There's nothing wrong with .22 and they are as accurate as .177. My range finding isn't and that's why I find .177 more forgiving, plus there are less aimpoints to remember. at the moment I am experimenting with .177 H7N FTT Green: 922FPS very flat trajectory and very accurate. Need to test them in the wind though. Sorin
colin lad
177 or 22 ?? there both as bad as each other if you cant hit the target, i am sick of hearing this debate , one for feather , one for fur ,my ase,' i use both, an if you can shoot straight you;ve got no problem. cheers nick spot on colin
slugger
ok first up this isnt a "debate" it was simply a question....... if there is zero benefit to 177 over .22 or vice versa, then why the hell are there the different calibre choices? there HAS to be differences, its physics......... all i was interested in was oppinions of old-hand air-gunners....... if you dont want to contribute, dont! but sulking wont help me form an "informed" descision

The Duncan
Having shot a good few thousand rabbits over the years with both calibres, my observations are: the .177 is easier to shoot accurately due to its flatter trajectory, there's more margin for error in range finding. There is slight (and I do mean slight) margin for error when hitting the kill zone due to harder impact from a .22. Eg, with a .177 the precision of shot placement needs to be 1" circle, with .22 you can get away with 1 1/4" circle. I can shoot accurately with .177 10 yards further than I can with .22 Finally, I prefer the flatter trajectory of the .177 and won't be going back to .22 except when using my Ratty at close range, say 15-25 yards.
