Rasher
Give me a day on the reds in arren any day. They are thin on the ground if your talking about the BASC scheme.
Bazooka Joe
They are thin on the ground if your talking about the BASC scheme. On that note then, how many have taken advantage of the BASC Scheme ? Bet it wasn't as unchallenging stalking as that which was recently advertised. That one expected you to pay £150 just for the pleasure of sitting up a high seat all day. BASC isn't that far off either,
Vince Green
Its the rural economy that we are talking about here. I can't believe anyone is suprised. Proper stalking is very expensive because the estates have massive overheads. However that scent of money always attracts other, less desirable types out to make Hot Shot's Fast buck (good pun by the way ). Rasher
On that note then, how many have taken advantage of the BASC Scheme ? Not as many as they had hoped for. Despite the various secondary marketing attempts to promote the scheme via the various forums. I believe there have been spare places on all of the hind stalking weeks that have been run and there are open slots on all of the ones yet to happen. £220 stalking fee +travel, +B&B can work out an expensive way of not shooting anything.
Crouch valley
I went to arren last year and this year on the stags. I shot three this year and my mate had one. Last year we had two each. I think you only get out what you put in on arren sure like all stalking you do have to be in the right place at the right time. I beleave its a great scheme and i for one will be going back its a cheap weeks stalking realy. The Basc scheme gets a big thumbs up from me

The weather was foul though, high winds and driving rain all week which I don't think helped. between all the parties out that week apparently 8 were taken. They are there but from what I've been told it's not a target rich environment. The hind cull plan for the entire season is only 70 beasts so, based on that, if they are culling 70 to sustain the population, there can't be a huge population to start with and it is a huge area. Do you have a luck charm or a rabbits foot may be Being nosey what did it cost you all in inc travel, B&B and sundries? I've thought about giving the Kings Forest scheme a try just to stretch my legs on a different bit of ground and have a chat with the local FA guys. You can't keep shooting high deer numbers and expect them to remain at the same level year on year. Don't forget the farms off the scheme have been hammering away at them as well for the last 3-4 years You also can't keep putting blokes out on the same ground day in day out week in week out and expect the deer to remain on your side of the fence regardless of how big a bit of ground they have to roam over. njc110381
I'd be happy to pay a stalker say £100 for a successful morning stalk. Call it half a days fair wages and a bit for the animal and his costs. Some of the prices are really steep though and I don't like it when there are big fees if you shoot something. A while back I went on a paid Fallow stalk but didn't see anything. That cost me £50 I think and I was very happy with that. The guy said if I see more than one then shoot them - it would still cost me £50! I have to be honest I would have felt rude taking more than one in that situation but it does go to show that there are good deals to be had. Shop around and if you don't like it then don't buy it. If I have spare Deer to shoot I'll happily share them for free, even if I don't get anything in return. I guess that's why I'm not rich?! Dunkield
On that note then, how many have taken advantage of the BASC Scheme ? I went to Arran on a hind week a few years ago with a mate, I agree with the comments about the pressure on those deer, you may get lucky of course but the odds are stacked against you as they seemed pretty well nocturnal...
