canker

My non-working chocolate lab has ear canker and has had it for some time now, we have previously taken her to the vets and they have given us ear drops to use and told us to clean the brown wax that is in the ear as well but it clears a bit but comes back after a while. would this be because the ear drops have'nt been used for long enough? I am wanting to get some stuff from the internet but what is the most effective to use and what else can I do to get rid of it or will it never dissapear?

any help and advice would be much appreciated, thanks Oli

Owning a pet is a privilege not a right. Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 it is you as the owner's responsibility to seek treatment when your pet becomes ill. Do the right thing and have it treated properly, or re-home it to someone who will.

This is what comes with responsible pet ownership.

Why should the vet cost more than necessary? Any idea how much it costs to run a vet practice? Any idea how much a private consultation is with a doctor? A damn sight more than the private healthcare the vet provides.

read what I have said, my dog has been to the vets multiple times and all they give us is ear drops that clean the ears, which we have used time and time again so please dont preach to me about owning a dog and reponsibilitiy. what I was asking was if there was anything else that people had used that had been effective for clearing the canker, so I would appreciate help that would benfit my dog not just me and if I still have the problem after this my dog will go back to the vets

I asked if you has called the vet and asked to speak to a vet but you failed to answer

If you are getting nowhere question the vet

you need it treated as already been said then you can look at preventing the problem

you could also ask the vet about this at the same time, If not happy with the vet then find a new one

 I said that I had been to the vets, anyone else that can help me and my dog out rather than trying to be a smart **** by analysing my every word and generally being an annoying idiot. seriously I'm trying to sort my dog out and get some advice but all I get is some jumped up **** that thinks he is some sort of authority

out of all of the forum sections i thought that this would be the least likely one for someone starting problems and arguements :hmm:

thank god for that, actually after being recommended thornit twice and reading reviews such as:

"A must have for your doggy meds cabinet. This stuff really does work, after spending god knows how much at the vet for my poor girl only for the problem to return, I was recommended Thornit, and I would recommend it to anyone. Great stuff, easy to use, and most important of all IT WORKS! Fab stuff, can't recommend it highly enough!"

"Vet presribed steroids which did not work, so tried Thornit and it cleared up within 2 weeks. The best stuff ever"

Looks like asking some like minded hunters on the internet could pay off unlike non hunting gun dog owners who run to the vets when their dog sneezes and kanoeing, kayaking

and for your information we have been to different vets and there all the same so it has nothing to do with money

Sometimes weeds and other organic substances enter the ear and result in an ear canker. A canker is primarily a fungal disease of woody plants. In dogs, it may cause a localized ulceration. Canker infection often results in a foul smell and a darkish discharge that emanates from the ear. Some weeds and organic matter can work their way into the inner canal and cause irreparable harm to the dog’s ear. In severe conditions, it may also prove to fatal.

please don't take my post the wrong way as i'm only trying to help.but my first call would be a vet.apache is a vet and i'm sure if you PM him he'd advise you on whatever medication your dog needs and if THORNIT is the right stuff to use for this sort of infection (i've used it for ear mites).good vets are hard to find and luckily we have a few localish to us but the closest one is rubbish so i understand where your coming from

thanks, its nice to have a pleasant reply, I have been trauling the internet looking for information on it but everything is a bit vague, but after twice being recomended thornit and then i have found endless pages of reviews for thornit from people in a similair situation of having been to the vets numerous times with exactly the same symptoms as my dogs and being subscribed all sorts of things but trying thornit and having the canker go for good after two weeks, so I have ordered some and will try that, if that fails then I will go back to the vets yet again.

but I take offence to people that accuse me of not looking after my dog properly and quoting me laws and telling me that I should re-home my dog and just being plain rude, I have been cleaning my dogs ears at least once a day the whole time to help prevent anything and I have been to the vets multiple times and given my dog bottles and bottles of perscribed ear drops. this is of course our much loved 10 year old familly dog which we have had since i was about six who is perfectly fit and healthy apart from this.

sent you a pm, is someone telling a little lie, did I say anything about your dog

trying to wind you up, I think that this would be more suitable if i said this about you

and a little joke about kayaking after all of your comments I think that I should be complaining about you but i dont need to try and prove anything, let me guess you pick up on shoots and do a spot of pigeon shooting what a hunter

I think that the only posts that i have taken and will in future take with a pinch of salt are yours as you are the first person i have come accross on here that i have had an issue with

What have you been using? Once a day with an ear cleaner is way to excessive and the irritation from the cleaning could be perpetuating the problem.

It's common for allergic skin disease to manifest as just ear problems as they are very sensitive skin. Some dogs require systemic therapy to cure the problem. Some ears require surgery to resolve ongoing issues.

Strange powder [with so much blatantly wrong drivel] isn't going to solve your problem.

The dog needs a proper work-up.

ok thanks for the advice, sometimes I use an ear cleaner which the vets give us and sometimes just cotton wool, I have also used olive oil.

The symtoms are: brown wax from the ear and a bad smell from the ear. I have seen so much on the internet about it but a lot of it is completely different information, I have also heard that it is normal for certain breeds to get it. I will try the powder and then if that doesnt work I will take her back to the vets again :good:

Olim, if I was you I would change the vet. I once had a JR that had canker, the vet gave me a liquid solution, it wasn't long before the JR was on the mend, don't know what it was but it worked OK,
