Query re serial numbers

Folks, have a query (well a few really) re serial numbers on shotguns.

The situation is that I have a Miroku shotgun that I bought around 20 years ago. I bought it from a guy (he might have been RFD status but I can’t remember) who had two identical guns. One had a nicer stock than the other, whilst the other had a better looking fore-end and/or barrels. To give me the best looking gun, he took the nicer looking barrels and fore-end from one gun, and put them on the nicer looking stock & action from the other. So, my gun now has serial number A stamped next to the trigger guard, and that is the s/n that appears on my SGC, but it also has serial number B stamped on a part of the barrels and also inside the fore-end.

I am in the process of selling the gun and the potential buyer has raised concerns about how to handle the different serial numbers. This issue had never occurred to me – I was new to shooting at the time of purchase, and my FEO has never mentioned the different numbers despite breaking down my guns over the years of renewals, house moves, etc.

Is the buyer right to be concerned? He is under the impression that the barrel & fore-end swap is a bit of a no-no unless there is a paperwork trail, and that the sale is about to open a can of worms. I’m assuming that we just use the s/n that appears on my SGC. Buyer is also in a different authority to mine.

Any thoughts/experiences here?

The action number is the only one that counts, obviously you will have been through 4 renewals with the number being checked each time so your force aren't concerned. Get him to talk to his FEO if he is worried, you are covered as you have the correct number on your ticket and its an old gun.

can't see it being a problem, what would happen if you had a accident with the forend, you would have it replaced with what ever you can get to suit, and then that would carry a different serial no. :good:

Thanks guys. That's exactly what I was thinking - how would replacement parts be handled? Also, what about some of the newer guns you can buy that have different barrels e.g. a 12 gauge set and a 20 gauge set? Do they all have the same serial number stamped on them? So you'd have different barrel sets with the same s/n?

Do all manufacturers stamp serial numbers on all parts or is this just the way Miroku/Browning operate? (I've only ever had Mirokus)

Hi I recently bought an as new franchi semi auto and noticed different serial numbers on the action and barrel so I checked with the importers and the local FAO who both said this is normal and that the only number that counts is the action number as barrels are interchangeable on most same model guns, the franchi barrel is the same one used by benelli and beretta and according to GMK is perfectly ok to have a different number to the action.

Another way of looking at it when I had my escort semi auto I had 2 barrels one in 26" and the original 28" the only thing that was on sgc was the action serial no which match the serial no on the original barrel but the 26" barrel didn't have a serial no and when I moved address the spare barrel was not even on my sgc questioned it with the licencing officer they where not bothered about it " just let us know if you sell it " is what I got told
