There are masses to choose from but the most common in the Uk is 1/2" UNF for standard barrels and 5/8 for heavier barrels, in Europe this will often be M14/1 or M18/1 on the heavier barrels.

 

I'm not entirely sure why, but it sounds a fair bet to stick to what the manufacturers commonly do!

 

So 5/8" or M18/1 seems the route!

Thanks all , its voiceing what i thought go for 5/8ths unf , that would be just enough for a thread protector to fit flush with the barell @ 22mm . Are the choices as plentyful in 5/8ths thread ?

 

Probably a good idea to check with the manufacturer of the Moderator you want before you cut the barrel, but 5/8 shouldn't be a problem, certainly no problem here......

hi plinker , is that for the reasons of turning a heavy barrel down to 1/2 and defeating the object of a varmint barrel , to me it does . and 5/8ths now im looking seem to be as plentyful as 1/2 are , im looking at a used small DM80 for now i dont need it to whisper just to take the edge off ,IM OPEN for any going whilst we are at it as 5/8ths is looking the favorite for my 223 , ive got the usual drawer full of rimmy/airgun mods to trade lol atb and again thanks for all the help gerry

You will not get anything to put on a .223 to make it whisper, all any of them do is take the edge off, simply a matter of how much edge!
