DrQ
Hi all.... Have been mostly using HULL COMP X (12B, 7.5, 28g, 65mm)shooting clay with multi choke Browning 325. Now have GAMEBORE SUPER STEEL..... (12B, 7.5, 28g, 70mm) What are the main differences (apart from the obvious) with lead & steel & does the extra 5mm make much of a difference? And being a beginner, which is the best kind to use? Thanks Q

Its mainly skeet and sport trap that i shoot. i know there is more pellets in a steel load than lead which i think is due to the difference in weight between lead and steel? when i run out of lead shot for other sporting venues i often use steel shot and dont really notice much of a difference. I have been told on here before that when shooting at further ranges lead is far better.

JonD
It comes down to what you are shooting. The steel will be longer as about 30% more shot is required to make up the load as it's less dense than lead. Steel retains less energy than lead and generally you need to use a greater shot size to have the same retained energy at greater distances, compared to a Comp X they will most likely have more recoil. I shoot a lot of steel as I mainly shoot skeet, for sporting I use Hull Pro Fibre lead. As a beginner also check that your gun is suitable for 70mm carts, that it is proofed for steel and don't go tighter than 1\2 choke unless the manufacturer of tha gun says you can. Generally with steel you need to go a choke lower than you would with lead to achieve the same pattern, if you want 1\2 put 1\4 in etc. Jon.
