Dunkield
Originally they were fed by leaving shot rabbits out for them, I don't think that happens any more, but people were feeding them to get up close to them too. With the number of game shoots locally there is plenty of carrion to hold them in the area for generations so I can't see them ever going anywhere. al4x
Agreed. I support re-introduction programmes to help struggling species make a comeback, but I can't help feeling that this programme is becoming a bit overdone. What's going to happen if the locals stop feeding them, for instance? They wouldn't survive, at least not in anything like the numbers that there are presently. I can't help thinking it would have been better to feed the few original introduced pairs for a while to encourage them to stay and breed, but then phase out the feeding, to see if it encouraged them to spread out quicker.. Dunno, I'm sure the RSPB must know what they're doing there is the dilema keep feeding them and will they ever spread out, whereas stop and they have to spread to look for food. Scully
Would their numbers be self-regulated if deliberate feeding was stopped,or would they then become a real threat to other species if they had to 'hunt' for food? Buzzard numbers have increased hugely(based on sightings)in our area in recent years,so we leave nothing for them, even when lamping.

nipper
Totaly unatural to feed them like that ! Just another coloured crow to clean up behind the buzzards ! Why cant they put as much effort into bringing back the song birds ? A far better use of there time!
PhilR
I beat on a shoot by Stokenchurch cutting and the Kites are circling there all the time. If a shot bird isn't picked up then it'll not be there for long as the Kites swoop in for it. When we're roost shooting the blooming things fly round and round above where you're standing which isn't a great help
