shmidt bender or zeiss

I have had top of the range Zeiss and just never got on with them - I didn't like the eye relief. Maybe that's just me or just the scopes I had.

I must have had well over a dozen assorted Swaro and S&B's scopes and have never been disappointed by any one of the them.

In the round, I still reckon S&B represents the best value for money quality scope.

It really depends what the rifle is going to be used for... and you need to be completely honest with yourself here as, buying one over the other for anything other than the correct reasons will be an expensive mistake to make.

If the rifle is GENUINLY going to be used more than 50% of it's time in the field (i.e. shooting live quarry) then get a Z6i in whichever mag set you feel is relevant to your shooting. If it is going to spend more than 50% of it's time on the range, then get the PMII.

The reticles available for the PMII are all designed to help with ranging based, normally, on the known size of things (buildings, vehicles, human beings!) They become almost useless in the field as the difference between the size of 2 animals can be great (thinking of deer here primarily, 2 examples of the same species can vary wildly in height) and so the ranging features of the ret won't work. Take the ranging funcionality out of the equasion and what you are left with is a bulky, heavy piece of glass with target turrets that may have been moved off zero when you take the shot and reticles with so much information in them that they will just confuse and let doubt creep in. The upshot is potential misses or worse... injured beasts. You are also paying a lot of money for advanced mechanics in these babies which will allow you to dial in up to 270 clicks of elevation (2000m with the right calibre and ammunition!) You simply don't need this in the field.

With the Z6 or 6i you have a simple crosshair... put the crosshair on the target and squeeze the trigger, simple! if it is a little further out and you can range it, then just dial it in on the ballistic turret, even more simple... All this for less money, considerably less weight and bulk and the same quality of glass....

Remember, the S&B has been developed to survive the battlefield and it's cost and weight is testimony to that...

Again... if you are target shooting and need the adjustment, rangefinding ability (practical rifle comps) and range (or if you are in law enforcement or the forces) then get the Schmidt... If you don't or aren't then get the Swaro.

Paul :good:
