Anyone read The Times? story titled Massive cull of

Recommended Posts

Noticed a story on The Times website about a cull of Crows and Magpies to save the dawn chorus. The website is subscription only though, so I couldn't read any more detail than that. ANyone know any further details?

Just wondered whether this is a real story or whether they have just caught on to a general trend.

I'm going to join the Songbird Trust today.

I do think that the RSPB's continued refusal to accept the impact that the likes of the magpie have had on the songbird population is just completely unacceptable.

EDIT:

I think the call for a cull on magpies and crows is old news, but it's good that someone has got it back in the public eye and are giving it another go.

It's amazing that the RSPB fail to accept this, seeing at the Magpie purposely lays its eggs before most other birds do to ensure it can feed its young with eggs from other nests.

they cant accept it or agree with it as it goes against everything they stand for. Anyone that has shot over ground that had lots of magpies on it will agree once the Magpie population is reduces the Songbirds and raptors start to appear back in numbers in only short space of time.

Nice one :good:

Seems there is something in it then.

Last paragraph:

The trial cull of crows and magpies [in March] will be carried out by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, which is considering sites in Hampshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Herefordshire and the Scottish Borders.

The RSPB has had its head so up far up its waste compactor for so long that they can't see what's actually happening out in the real world. The worrying thing is, this particular charity should be expert in avian matters.

My grandfather lives in a corner of MK that gets plenty of grey squirrels and literally thousands of magpies. The old folk feed them. He once asked me where the songbirds were and I told him exactly why his bird table almost only ever sees greys, crows and magpies.

But I don't think he saw it as 'his' problem.

As I understand it now, the only birdcrimes the RSPB record now are those against raptors.

So swans, songbirds, and corvids are 'non-birds' now - so whats the boggle? Open season I say!

They know exactly what's happening but if they do anything about it in public bang goes well paid jobs and extortionate pensions :o
