Guest stiv24
I run a small roving syndicate of 8 guns based in the Somerset area. This year we have shot at 8 different estates from Shropshire to Cornwall with bags on average around 150/200 and in general we have had a really good season. Buying shooting through one of the many websites that shoots use to advertise is pot luck and trying to find the estates which provide consistently high birds through out the day is nigh on impossible. As I am responsible for booking the days, if they don't come up to scratch I do feel a degree of responsibility to the other lads. My question is this - Is there a shoot that you have been on that you would recommend? Do you have a contact there? Or do you beat or pick up on a shoot that fits the bill? It doesn't have to be local to Somerset as I'm sure there are many on here who may be able to take advantage of your recommendation. It is not important whether it's £25 a bird or £40 as long as we have had a great day. Before all the I don't ever pay for my shooting or shooting high birds is wrong brigade pipe up - if you don't agree with it start another thread to moan! And everyone else thanks for your input
rimfire4969
I have shot at the shoot listed below as a full paying gun and have nothing to do with the shoot. The keepers and beaters / picker ups were very friendly and they produced some very high sporting birds. We shot through the day with only a light lunch then a very good roast dinner at the pub afterwards (all in the price). Its a few miles outside of Bude on the Devon / Cornwall boarder, on one drive you can shoot the birds in Devon and when they hit the ground over the stream they are in Cornwall 6 of us had a 100 bird day, and we will be booking a couple of days next season. It is the best shoot i have been to this season and would recommend. Norton & Dexbeer Shoot Good luck with your search. PM me if you want more info. Dustem Dave
You'll not find that many shoots with nothing but high birds they,ve all got their killer drives cause they've got to cater for everyone. My mates went to DOWNTON in shropshire and reconed it was awesome 3 lads who shoot regulary 2-3 times a week some weeks fired just over 100 shots for 9 birds on one drive but be warned if your team dosn't shoot well on the first drive, you'll be moved onto lower birds, still good birds but not the screamers

rimfire4969
Interesting bit from the mag "The Field", it lists in their view the top 10 best southwest shoots. I dont know most of them, all are big prices for the best shooting. I know a few who have shoot or beat at Caerhays and Carnanton both put on a great day with quite a few famous people going during the season. If i was going to pick one i would go to Carnanton, a few very simple reasons and closer to my house and a good friend beats there a 2 or 3 times a week. LOOK HERE. it is a pdf so may take a few seconds to load up.

Alycidon
Merryvale and Blyth, near Atherstone north east of Birmingham, you can see the NEC from some parts of the estate, its a very large estate and you can have a 20 minute drive to get to the next drive. I have shot there as a guest for maybe 5 or 6 years and rarely done the same drive twice in that time, very enjoyable, may now be split into two shoots as I have not been there since 2009. Keepers are very skilled at getting the bag while spreading the day out. Birds for all skill levels but most are 25-35 yards so would suit the average shot. Dont have contact details but should be easy to find. There is an excellent commercial partridge shoot near RAF Cottesmore in South Lincs, not far off the A1, if interested I could find more details.
