darren m
and yet another problem on my older springer bitch , there is a small lump on her right side. i first noticed it 3 or 4 weeks ago , it started as a tiny pimple with a little bit of blood spot in the centre , like an insect bite. i thought maybe it was a thorn or bite but nothing as come out , noticed it after beating when i was routinely checking her over . any i left it and kept and eye on it and it slowly started to get bigger , it looked a little bit moist so i,ve been cleaning it with hibi scrub and germaline ( from day one ) just in case . its still only very small about the size of a wart in fact thats what it looks like a bit a large wart . its not bothering her although my other springer as took an interest in it and on occasion trys to lick it. its loose under the skin and doesnt feel attached to anything. i,ve sqeezed it several times but it just wheeps a bit of blood. on looking at various old posts i was wondering if it could be a histiocytoma as it looked very similar to a pic i saw . its dried up now and you could pick it just like a hard scab but underneath the lump is still there. any thought thanks
Imperfection
It sounds like a cyst-normally they're harmless and go away by themselves, but do sometimes need a vet to remove them if they get big or cause the dog discomfort. It also might have been a small abcess which has come to a head and the foreign object has been ejected from the body then it heals. You might want to keep a tub of magnesium sulphate paste (you get it from any chemist for around £2) and next time one forms smear a bit over and cover with a plaster for the day.It draws out any foreign object (thorns, grass seeds, glass etc) which dogs often pick up and also the envitable puss.A friendly veterinary nurse gave me this tip years ago and have used it with great success ever since. agjm
+1 for the magnesium sulphate paste if it is a cyst or absess. Great for if you get a splinter you cant get out too.

vampire
Took my gsd to the vets on thurs to have a look at a couple of lumps, turned out to be a blocked sebatious ! gland, your dog definatly does not have that as they dont bleed. point and shoot
I haven't any first hand experience of such things but could this be the remains of a Tic. Apparently if they aren't removed completely the jaws remain and the area becomes infected. Worth a visit to the vet.
The Duncan
It is more than likely a sub-cutaneous or sebaceous cyst, although its hard to get a good clear pic of course. Harmless if unsightly. Duncan Edited January 29, 2011 by The Duncan
darren m
insect bite or thorn was my first thought when i checked her over because it appeared so quick , but its been there for weeks now and enlarged slightly , still only small about the size of a wart and rough on top . it only bled if when i tried to give it a good squeeze to see if anything came out
