pigeon-richardwall
I am looking into buying a air rifle for shooting rabbits and was wanting to know what would be best a .177 or a .22.?
Clubshot
No Location Check out Local Air Gun club/s And see what others are using & Why Many Club Shooters Also Hunt - Often using the same Gun's To practise on the Ranges with BOB/R
pigeon-richardwall
I stay in Dumfries and galloway and we dont have any air rifle clubs that we know of. I have shot all rifle's of all kind up to a 243. so am pretty good shot with a rifle am just need a good rabbit air gun for shooting around live stock. northeastshooter
its person preference 177 travel flatter and 22 are harder hitting both are fine for head shots on rabbits Edited January 30, 2011 by northeastshooter
chrisjpainter
as above mate, it's personal choice and there's not a lot more to it. the one thing i would say is that because of the higher velocity and flatter trajectory, .177 can go straight through if you miss all the bones of the rabbit, which mightn't be ideal if there is livestock around. Don't want sheep/cows inadvertently eating stray pellets!
Albion
OMG! Not the Great Debate again!!!
hoTshoT-16
.22 all the way because it hits harder the new gun, is it non/fac

hoTshoT-16
tx200 or a prosport at a push more expensive weirauch hw95 or bsa supersport are cheaper but very good springers
FalconFN
Both can be used but for me .177 medium weight pellets win without question. They have a flatter trajectory so it's much easier to be accurate, They fly faster and pellets are cheaper. .22 may retain a very small percent more of it's energy at longer ranges but the amount is insignificant and academic if you can't hit the target. The only advantage for using .22 that I can think of is for short range shooting of rats etc.
pigeon-richardwall
I like the look of the BSA super sport I have seen a .177 with scope on it new for £225 I thought that is quite a good deal. What do you think?.

rabbit.slayer.no.1
i shoot with a theoben evo. and its a .20 which i think is best of both worlds hard hitting and still have that nice clean shot line that a .177 has .
Albion
Supersports are good but have quite a hard recoil, especially a .177. Also, don't skimp on your scope. A **** scope will just make a decent gun disappointing to shoot. Wait a few weeks and save some more pennies, rather than wasting money on something you don't like. Or buy a decent gun secondhand rather than a **** one new!

vampire
A springer in .22 were all the rage in the day and .177 considered a toy,now with pcp air guns thats all changed as a .177 has a faster flatter trajectory (fact)thus reaching impact quicker and further than a .22 pellet and as only 3-4lb is required to kill a rabbit a .177 will still be killing rabbits when the .22 is falling into the ground with the owner practising hard their holdover skills and the .177 owner will out range any .22 12flbs with (according to some one off here who put it on the chair) 22flbs being required to equal that of the .177 rifle,so unless you need a hard hitting rat killer at short distance i would go for a .177 multi shot pcp, either way i have owned both springers and pcp in .177 an .22 and i shot more rabbits at longer distance with the .177 pcp aa s410 meteor .22 mercury .177 ultra .22 aa 410 .177 shot further than the others aa 410 .22 tx 200 hc .
