Set up costs?

Ok, so having just got permission on land already passed by the feo for fac, I'm thinking about applying for my fac, and trying to get a 22-250 for foxes and rabbits,or something suitably similar( I only want to have one rifle), my question is what sort of set up costs can I expect for a used rifle scope etc? I don't want anything fancy just a accurate tool for the job.

I'll also need a ammo safe, already got gun safe, obviously £50 for the fac fee as well, etc etc.

Also how much can I expect to spend on ammo/reloading equipment.

I have experience using a with 22lr and air rifles and shotguns,

Many thanks for any info

If you have experience with a 22 rf you will know that there is no 1 rifle that is suitable for vermin and fox. If you are woried about the pennies before you even apply for your fac I can't see you using a 22-250 or any other cf rifle for rabbits as at about £1 a pop it makes a very expensive rabbit (unless you reload which again is expensive to setup) If you must only have 1 rifle you will need to decide on what percentage rabbit/fox you will be shooting as that will decide the gun you need. As for setup costs the safe around £25 argos or similar for your ammo, rifle and scope second hand half decent around £500 mark to as much as you want to spend on a new setup. Reloading setup is similar to the rifle you can get cheap or quite expensive (you get what you pay for) keep an eye out in the forsale section as reloading gear comes up now and then or you could go for new LEE gear which is ok and quite cheap you could get all you need for around £200 to get you going. There is alot for you to think about before you apply for your fac so start reading and learning before you apply :good:

Reloading gear can come after you've had a chance to familiarise yourself with the set up.

I'd recommend buying some factory rounds first, then you can keep all the brass, and reload it if you decide to go down that route.

My .22-250 kit consisted of:

.22-250 Lee Loader (search youtube for Lee Classic Loader) - It's a very basic, but cheap and effective loading tool.

Small digital scales accurate to 0.1 grn

Digital calipers

Small hammer with plastic head

Case trimmer for calibre

Deburr/chamfer tool

Primer pocket cleaner tool

Funnel

Steel wool for brass finishing

Kinetic bullet puller (not entirely essential, but handy)

And of course powder, primers, bullets and brass.

Might have missed a couple of small items out, and I used a cordless drill to case trim and clean/deburr the brass.

In total, not counting the consumable items, was about £80. Even if you decide to upgrade to a proper loading press, you can keep most of the bits and pieces, and sell the Lee loader on at next to no loss.

My groupings with hand loads were equal to or better than the factory ammo I was buying :good:

We all have a view, that's what forums are about, mine is simple, you are 'avin a larf considering a 22-250 for bunnies. Of course it is capable, and I've put holes in them with my .308, but neither my .308 or a 22-250 is a rabbit gun!

If it MUST be one gun for both then consider a .22WMR, it's the cheapest option, and fox to 125 yard, if you are good maybe 150 yards. I can V Bull mine at 200 yards! :good:

Hornet is very capable in this situation but ammo is not easy to find and not that cheap, if you don't reload it may not be worthwhile.

So that leaves the .223, I say the .223 as there is a lot of relatively inexpensive factory ammo available, still not your usual rabbit tool though, that's for sure!

:hmm::good:

Unfortunately no such gun exits really. 22lr,17hmr,22centrefire,all different beasts for different applications imo. 22wmr a great round, however u might do better to consider a 17hmr to suit your needs. Flatter shooting and u can push out the range more than the 22wmr. However don't dismiss the 22wmr as said in the previous post it is a tried and tested round and in fact the 17 hmr is a necked down 22wmr case to accept the .17 bullet. Personally i think the hmr would probably be the best allrounder :good:

Hi there Luckyshot. The answer to your question is no. Northumbria dont advocate hmr for fox. Hmm. Like i said earlier no such allround rifle exists unfortunately. We dont have a problem (at present  )on our permission with Mr Charlie but thats not to say we wont in the future but if we do i'll be putting in for a variation for a .243,our land is cleared up to that calibre so no problems there. I think that the 22/250 is the best choice for fox but the 243 means you can stalk if you so desire. Just my way of thinking though

Disn't think so, just curious incase they had changed their mind. Durham also don't allow it so I too chose the 243 over a smaller cf so Im able to take deer aswell as fox.

I think I'll look into the hmr for a start wonder if Devon and Cornwall clear hmr for fox?

I personally think the hmr would probably be your best option but i doubt if Devon & Cornwall would recommend it for fox. Comes back to the original post though. Theres no all round rifle so to speak. However thats not to say the hmr is not capable of killing fox cleanly. Of course it is if used at sensible ranges. You could of course put a 22/250 on your ticket and then if funds permit see if you could pick up a good used example. Theres plenty of good ones about. Hope this helps. Good luck with your choice and safe shooting
