TomV
you might find roost shooting difficult with an air rifle
pavman
you may wish to try and get a start on Rats and tree rats roost shooting is for shotties not saying you cant shot the odd woodie clean with a AR but to be fair to the bird you really want a nice clean kill so use teh right tool for the job
karlbird
There is nothing wrong with pigeon roost shooting, personally it is one of my favourite forms of shooting, and in my opinion one of the most tricky. The key is to know your and your combos limits and only take shots that you know will be successful. Moving trees are no good with an air rifle and the shots tend to be closer so more skill is required in the concealment department. Head shots only, or through the back of the bird, a pellet from an air rifle will not go through the hard breast bone of a pigeon. By no means don't not try it, but make sure that you are well practised first and try to only take shots that are within your comfort zone - then you will see some of the most exciting and challenging shooting that there is out there. The Duncan
TBH I started with shotgund because of woodpigeons. My boy could eat his bodyweight in woodies, but the air rifle wasn't the best tool for the job, shotguns are. When a woodie would explode from a hedge, I was just left silently cursing, with any half decent shotty, I have a chance at the delicious critter Decoying? the odd cranial shot with AR when quarry is on the ground and completely still, or shotty - taking them in the air! No brainer! I love my airweapons, but the shotgun (that I used to despise) certainly has its uses! After all, I insisted I'd never get a shotgun or live firing rifle, now I have both with more to come - never say never! bruno22rf
If you can find the right circumstances then your AG will produce as many dead pigeons as a shottie. Most pigeons will fly around a wood before pitching in to check it out and if theres a tree within a few hundred yards they can be tempted to land with lofted decoys or quite often will land of their own choice to scan the area.So long as they arrive in small numbers then you can pop them off all evening and the silence of the AG wont scare every other bird for miles.Shotguns are best most of but not all the time-as warmer weather approaches the birds tend to roost wherever they fancy and the sound of gunshot can put them right out of your area.As you seem new to this game might i suggest that you spend as much time as possible practising before shooting live targets-shooting upwards as in roost shooting is an art in itself and every hour spent getting accustomed to your gun will pay you back tenfold.
