let me know

1 both should be capable of very tight groups

2 both use the same bullets so extra velocity would win that so i think the br takes that one

3 useable range for what? both are good at upto 1000yrds on targets

4 dont know on this one tbh

5 why not get a .243 for a simpler life if your set on a 6mm?

Hi Highseas,

i have owned both, from 2000-2001 i shot competitive BR with a custom built 6mmPPC which was monotanously accurate, in the end becoming a boringly tedious shooting discipline i packed it in.

The 6mmPPC is and always will be the king of short range (100-300yds) Benchrest

IMO the PPC has its place and thats in the competiiton field, however as a short range super accurate varmint round it has only one contender, the 6mmBR.

In like barrel twist rifles (1:14) of equal quality i defy anyone to give a definate answer as to which is the most accurate, maybe if you shot thousands of rounds through a pair of custom built BR rifles one day the more accurate round may begin to show superiority.

I had a Cooper Varminter in standard twist 6mmBR and many rabbits and several fox's fell to it but the 6mmBR really starts to shine when combined with a 1:9 or 1:8 twist barrel and bullets in the 105grn weight category.

1000yds capability becomes a genuine goal with heavy bullets and most of the 600yd and 1000yd BR records are held by 6mmBr or derivitives there of.

If you are looking for a rifle that is going to be used in the field for most of its life with occaisional use on the range then get a 6mmBR, with standard twist and 68-70grn bullets it will be good for 500yds kills on small bodied mammals, go for a faster twist barrel and heavier bullets and you can extend that effective range by 300yds easily.

Both the 6mmPPC and the BR are only marginally legal as a deer cartridge, with many loads falling below the required energy levels.

The drawback of both these cartridges is the availability of factory rifles, i do believe that currently only Cooper and RPA offer rifles off the shelf (all be it with a waiting period)

In the case of non standard twist rates a heavy premium is charged which brings factory rifles in the domain of semi custom rifles.

Used buys in both calibres come up now and again and are good buys as niether have a reputation for throat erosion, abused rifles are very few and far between.

Which ever you buy, both will be a joy to own and shoot. :)

Ian.

some good reading their. i shoot mainly vermin crows foxes and hares. roe is my other quarry too i just picked up two tonight with the 223.

but i enjoy shooting at longer ranges be it targets or crows and such like(i dont shoot deer over 250) many of the places i shoot are open any how and you just cant get close to the quarry. i also partake in freindly shooting comps .

my head keeper has a 6mm.47 build on a sako action and it jams very very badly,so much so he wont use it! but his son has a 6mm br on a howa 1500 action andits a dream in metal! single hole groups every time, mad stuff like shooting crows in the eye evey shot, its a tack driver!

i have heard of brs and ppc haveing feed problems. i would be most likely to shoot 60g to 80g v-max for most of my work but would like the chance to go 90g-100g if i wanted. i may just put in for a 6mm insted of being to fussy and saying 6mmbr ect

the semi custom road is one i want to go down dont have to carry a rifle far i always use the quad lol

ime now thinking of the 6.5-47 :hmm:

6mm ppc is king out to 300y just look at the benchrest results in the USA

from there out its 6mm BR

6mm ppc out to 1000y well good luck with that one

6.5 x 47 lapua and 6x47 are just 6mm Br's on steroids so in my opinion don't shoot any better they just get there a little bit quicker.

i have shot

6mm BR good reliable round but a bit lobby for me and what i do

6x47 good round and feeds well unlike above but flatter shooting.

and now the 6.5 x 47 lapua does all above and slightly better for deer. this at present is my do all rifle. but it is a switch barrel and i can turn her in to a 270 wsm (change bolt body as well)

ATB
