Sorry lads but I think some of you need to step onto planet reality. Shooting is a minority market, and lamping is only a very small part of that minority market, so high tooling investment is not feasible. The moulded plugs are not only a Deben item as I have seen them on kiddies electric cars, so I suspect they bought in to patented tooling for probably quite a lot of money.

Picture the procedure if you will: wiring is stripped to the required depth, terminals crimped onto the ends of the wires, terminals with wires inserted into one half of an injection moulding tool that is sealed round the edges after allowing for the flexible grommet, mould closes over the assembly making a cavity that will be filled with rubber, rubber is injected around the wires and crimped terminals. Machine opens and the operator withdraws the finished end.

Perhaps someone could explain how to make a mould that will allow the wires to be presented to one half of the tool while the other half closes over it but somehow sliding along the figure of eight cable section. Then when the moulding is done how the mouded end can be removed given it is now moulded into one half of the tool.

The better solutions to my way of thinking is to modify the plastic end of the battery - or supply it with a fly lead which has the moulded end on. But then again some people like to hate Deben anyway. I hate people smoking but I don't spit my dummy out about it.

Lastly, noboby forces us to buy their products - if anyone can do it better why not start your own minority market business. Deben have posted on this forum so perhaps those that want a moan can PM them.

you are indeed correct - the item is called an 'SAE plug' and was used a lot in automotive wiring 15-20 years ago; the issue i (and by all accounts a few others) is that this plug performs badly in this application - on most of the deben leads / wiring looms its possible to cut these off and hardwire to prevent this problem - but this is not so on the battery; which i think is shoddy.

it wont take long for someone else to start selling lithium lamping batteries with a better connection - and deben will lose some considerable market share.

ps - i did try and tell deben ; but was treated as if i was the only person who thought the plugs were naff - hence the original post

Here is the member search result but I think the topics got lost during the upgrade or some such software glytch. http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/user/3391-deben/

It was relevant to a thread I had running about their 'dimmer switch - which turned out to be much more than just a mere dimmer.

I'm sure that if there was a viable demand for such a plug one of the big players like Maplin, Rs etc would have it listed, truth is we are an almost unique niche market so will have to take what is available or improvise. Would it be too much trouble to fold it over the edge and wrap some tape or a strong laggy band around it to constrain it?

These might be able to help. http://www.pmbl.co.uk/Lithium_Ion.aspx

Or swap the plugs a bit - http://clulite.cluson.co.uk/lithium-ion-battery-packs/378-12volt-92amp-liion-battery-pack.html
