tlennox
Took one of my ESS to the vets this afternoon with two sores on her front paws that she's been chewing for a couple of days. The last straw came when I found two sores on one of her ears, thought the leg sores were just where she had a slight skin irritation. My second dog has shown no signs at all. The vet reckoned it could be Mange picked up from a fox as she had had contact with three foxes on the last shoot of the season, (one particularly good drive). She gave me a set of antibiotics for the dog showing the sores and Stronghold for both dogs, £67 in total. I thought the dog was wounded until I paid that. Surely someone out there knows a cheaper effective method of treating Mange. Yes I'm a tight b4stard but I don't begrudge paying that to look after my dogs, as I wouldn't shoot without them, just wondered if it could be done wthout funding my vets next caribean hoilday. garyb
You can buy Stronghold or Advocate online for a lot less money... Google it!
al4x
no you can't unless you get a prescription from your vet, they are both POM's But they are best used to prevent it in the first place, with mange forget anything other than the vets as it takes some serious getting rid of. Best thing is treatment with either of those products throughout the season if they are going to be in contact with foxes. markbivvy
Lindane Malathion Permethrin 10% sulfur ointment any of these would do it.and can be bought without a proscription usedf or treating scabies in folk.. this is the best stuff, thought they had stopped selling it. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Benzyl-Benzoate-50ml-High-Purity-Top-Grade._W0QQitemZ390218223375QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=215234727700&rvr_id=215234727700&cguid=8246313a12e0a0aa17847d74ffc5284d Edited March 4, 2011 by markbivvy

If your dogs come into contact with foxes treat them monthly with Stronghold - simple and very effective.
kent
When i did a lot of foxing back in the eighties i used to treat the dogs with a powder you added to water and bathed them it was called Alugan if memory serves me, it was also cheap and i got it from the vets. All i can say is it worked wonders on clearing the stuff.Anyway why begrudge £67 it seems a small amount in comarisom to shooting generally if it works first time over, admitedly you dont want half a dozen courses of the stuff! Mange is a mite that lives under the skin, get the kennel a mega clean or you might be chasing your tail
