bruno22rf
I,ve shots loads of squirrels over the years but never really hunted them specifically,I,ve now been asked to clear a small wood that is "over run" with them but after being there twice this week i have yet to see one.Is it the wrong time of year or am i missing something obvious? hoTshoT-16
put up a bird table to attract them and then shoot them, if the place is over run you are bound to shoot something
Colster
Not sure it's legal to bait to guns, even for vermin. This time of the year get a lofting pole and poke the dray, they'll come flying out and can be shot with an air-rifle as they will often pause but you need to be quick and a shotgun is a better bet. Once they've been dealt with, pull the dray down and you can easily identify active drays next time.
The Duncan
air rifles when you ambush them and they pause long enough for an accurate shot to find their brainbox, or drey poke and blast with shotty as he legs it. Nicer eatin if done with an air rifle though Good luck hitting a (rapidly) moving squirrel with an accurate airgun shot Edit: I tend to hit them hard august onwards when they are actively feeding to fatten up for the winter. I've had many a happy afternoon ambushing them. A stick, about 3-4ft long, smeared here and there with peanut butter and leant against a tree is a good draw - easy escape route up the stick and to the tree plus easy meal. Leave one out a day before you want to shoot, re-apply peanut butter bait to the stick before you settle in to ambush. Site properly and near their 'runs' through the trees whoch you'll know if you've observed them enough. Have patience and happy hunting Edited March 10, 2011 by The Duncan
Dekers
They are up broadly the same hours as we are, or more specifically in daylight, you will not see many if you go lamping! Hit them now before the foliage grows, and again in the autumn/winter. In the summer months (heavy foliation) they tend to head up quick and get lost. Air rifles can be challenging and shotguns can bring numbers! ATB!
grasshopper
I had 6 in under 2 hours on Monday. Just sat 25yds from a Pheasant feeder that still has wheat in it and they kept coming I used to put Fenn traps out regularly,as you would for Stoats,Weasels etc. They catch loads of Squirrels as they can't resist investigating the tunnel.
