Grey crow V wee lamb

I hope these photo work. It the first time I have tried to resize them.

My friend has 100 acers and 130 sheep, all starting to lamb this week. the grey crows are killing lots of his lambs. They pick the tongues out or split them plus their eyes. Either way their dead.

This morning I got to the field were some sheep were about 06:30 hrs. I set up a wee hide (see photo, hopefully). A ewe had just finished lambing (2) and I though this would be the place. I set up about 65-70yards in below thorn trees and waited. After about 45 mins 6 Greys flew in. They ate at the afterbirth for a bit and then the one in the photo went for the lamb.

I shot him closer to the lamb than normal, 3-4ft away but it was either that or the crow would have finished it.

I know it is only a Grey crow but I felt so satified shooting this. I have been trying for a very long time to shoot a Weather (bolt) - Winchester Lazers, great wee round.

Note the barrel of the rifle, covered in hesien to hide the SS barrel and break straight lines.

Very well done .

I never realized that your Shepards/Shepardesses had this problem to deal with aswell as the foxes. Over here it is just fox and coyotes for the most part. A little farther up north and you would run into a few bears, but I think that our only avian predator would be the Bald and Golden Eagles and I have only heard of that a handful of times.

Keep up the good work. There is nothing that I hate more than loosing a calf, or lamb.

Yes new to the flock we dont have the bear problem but crow do a lot of damage. As JohnGalway said, once a ewe roles unto her back while heavy in lamb she can't get back on her feet. The crows, black and Grey open them up like a tin opener would and there history. My friend had a ewe loose her eye to a grey crow last week. The crow took it out as he was walking up to her to scare the bird away. They are cheeky at this time of year.

Lambs - the crows, worst of all greys, take out eyes, tongues, or split the tongue or new borns, as you will know that currents for it.

Calves - the greys will also peck of the tender hoove of a new born calf, once that is done, the calf is history.

It is a terrible thing to see an otherwise healthy calf die just because a dumb grey crow took its wee feet.

I am not a framer but grew up on the farm and have lived all my life in the country and close to farmer; many of them my friends.

Foxes & dogs are the other problem we have. Where I was rared, my cousin was always having his pedigree Borderleisters worried by dogs. I never new until I had to clean up the intestines of dead sheep just how far they could stretch. The dogs just eat into the rear end of the running sheep and over serveral 100 yrs she emptyed herself. Many bad memories of this.

So now you know why I hate things that hurt sheep or calves. In fact all of my life I have hated anything or anyone that picked on the defenceless.
