ian_in_the_midlands
Okay, I know it is not shooting, but when not in the fields with the gun I am out with a metal detector. I am always looking for permission for new fields to detect in the Staffordshire/Shropshire area. The usual deal is 50%/50% split with the land owner if I find anything of anything over the value of £200. I always try to leave a field as I found it. I make sure all holes dug are refilled and any rubbish uncovered is taken away. If anyone able to help, please PM me. This is a genuine request for metal detecting. I am not trying to poach people's shooting. Thanks for your patience .... will let you get back to reading about shooting again now .
malantone
Put a load of your finds musket balls, buckels, coins etc in your pocket and go and knock on a few doors, farmers are usualy very interested in the history of their land. when you get the conversation started don`t forget to mention the hoards that have been found up and down the country, have a contract with the fifty fifty split in your pocket, I can`t see any farmer agreeing to anything over £200 being solely yours, he`ll probably tell yuo to "go away", you should just say any thing of any value will be split. I have a Whites Spectrum XLT its getting on a bit now but still turns stuff up. good luck mate Tony A. Edited April 5, 2011 by malantone
Billy.
I'm interested. How often does a metal detector actually find something worth more than a tenner? Obviously it's down to where you're searching, but I shoot over a load of land surrounding a roman road.
Kes
Its not all about money guys. Archaeology is worth it alone. Roman roads usually have anglo-saxon burials in the ditches either side. Never found anything of value myself. I have a c scope. Any idea of the best detector for a reasonable price?
ian_in_the_midlands
Hi Malantone, You are spot on with your advice, and it is the approach I usually use. I do make it clear that anything of value will be split. I thought I would try another method by posting a request on here, and hopefully tap into local shooters' knowlege of the land - like Billy. A shame you are in Herts and not Staffordshire. It is not often I find anyting of any value. I have never found anything of significant value but I live in hope. The majority of people who enjoy metal detecting do it for the interest in history, and not for financial gain. Here are a link to a few of the things I have found: http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=28271&cat=all http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=27415&cat=all http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=26861&cat=all http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=28354&cat=all So, if anyone in the Staffordshire/Shropshire area, know of any fields with Roman roads, Deserted medieval villages, old market areas, ancient footpaths, etc, or simply signs like old pottery on the fields, and know who owns the land then I would be interested in knowing about it. Thanks.
ian_in_the_midlands
Hi Kes, What is a resonable price, and what sort of land do you detect on? Have a look on the second hand section here: http://www.staffsmetaldetectors.co.uk
malantone
I got in touch with the County (Cumbrian) Archaeologists office and asked for a list of their listed sites, as you can imagine they were horrified that a metal detectorist should want such a list, that is until i explained that as a lot of sites are no more than a map reference,I was keen to avoid the sites and avoid breaking the law and without the list I could quite easily do so. As these places are listed and protected we obviously cannot go on them, that dosen`t mean we can`t go in the area with the land owners permission, for instance our local castle/Peel tower is listed but the fields around aren`t and these were the training grounds for troops and local population, and as such are happy hunting grounds, nothing of great value, IE :- musket balls, buckles a worn silver groat and all kinds of bits and pieces, along with several hundred/thousand bits of rubbish, then the iron nails, lead, bronze and iron dross/slag which shows that small scale smelting went on around the area. It`s been a while since I`ve been out but writing about it has rekindled the spark, time to get the batteries charged, see you boys. Tony A. ian_in_the_midlands
Hi malantone, Have you written to PETA yet to see if they know where the pest pigeon shooting fields are? Scheduled sites can be found on here: http://magic.defra.gov.uk/website/magic/ It is not an easy site to use, but select "design my own topic", then tick Scheduled Monuments, and Registered Battlefields. You can then bring up the maps. The site can be a bit slow. Another good web site is http://www.digital-documents.co.uk/ Go into the The Archaeological Sites Index and put in a location. You will find much of the information you are looking for on there, but there is a small fee if you want to see all the information. Good luck! HEAD SHOT NO1
I'm interested. How often does a metal detector actually find something worth more than a tenner? Obviously it's down to where you're searching, but I shoot over a load of land surrounding a roman road. Alot, more the 50% of the time too. I don'nt detect but I've lost my best buddies to it and now 2 years on they still ain't come shooting. Just has hard to get permission with detector as it is any other common reason.its as bad as asking for shooting I hear with the knock backs. Th amount of gold and coins my pals found is unreal,he recons that he atleast gets his petrol and beer money back each time he goes out, thats him his bro and oyjers that have betrayed me lol they have left me with the other brothers land to shoot but its boring by my self

bruno22rf
I had shooting permission on a field just outside Buckingham and when I mentioned that I was a keen detectorist the owner gave me his blessing to detect all his land.In over 5 years I never bothered/had time and I then moved away. What happened 2 years ago-one of the largest hoards of Roman coins found for years and some coins never even seen before-many on the surface!!! Not sure if the hoard has been finally valued yet but last I heard the 3 detectorists were looking at over £70k each-burger.On another note I have since packed up detecting and have got permission for several "keen" detectorists on my old grounds and have been let down every time by them-they tend to come once and never return. In the heart of Bucks just outside an ancient village with Roman occupation and a Roman road alongside-Anglo saxon burials on the edge of the village and surrounded by previously discovered hoards (not to mention civil war action) what the heck do they want? Never again.
ian_in_the_midlands
Hi Bruno, Although I now live in Stafford I am from Buckinghamshire, and still return regularly - both metal detecting and shooting. There is a lot of history around there. There are a lot of reasons why people only detect a field once... Maybe they found nothing? Maybe the fields were covered in modern rubbish? (Termed green waste, it should be bio-degrable but often contains tin foil etc, and makes the fields undetectable). Maybe they were simply not as keen as they made out. Although I accept that it is a little ignorant of them not to report back any finds (perhaps they never had any) how is this letting you down? You say yourself - you have given up metal detecting. bruno22rf
They have let me down because I have gone to the trouble of gaining them written permission from the relevant landowners,in my time and at my expense.I have then taken the trouble to show them the land in question and access routes etc.I have even accompanied a couple of them and some nice founds have been made (civil war siege piece-trade token never seen by local museum before-Anglo Saxon coin (cant remember the king but it was Harolds brother)worth over £500-loads of musket balls-the list goes on.)As mentioned before I have access to some great sites but the guys that I have dealt with dont seem keen enough to get down to it.
