Browning
Do you lads that reload .243 and .270 for Deer have a favourite bullet head ? Which manufacturer and style do you find effective and consistant ?
AndyCM
Hi Browning, I can only comment for .243 I have had good results with Speer 100g BTSP's (ref 1220) with some RL22 & also Nosler 95g BT's (if you can get them) with 42.5g (max) of RL22. Good Luck AndyCM
leon
Hornady A-max... can't get any better in my opinion, both accurate and dependable for instant kills without coming out the other side so all the energy is in the target. AndyCM
Hi Leon, What powder do you use with the A-Max ? are these the 105g bullet heads ? Thanks AndyCM
Gemini
I use 100grn Nosler Partition bullets with 40grns of Hodgdon’s H414 in my Tikka .243. This is a very accurate load out to a point-blank range of 200yds using a 3 inch aiming mark. G.M.
Guest john5
hi , i use the same bullets for whatever,,,,,70grn,,, nosler balistic tips, 36gr, of hodgeden 4895,,,,, and i have found that i can wreck "the computor room" at 200 yds, wether its a fox or deer
dunganick
Computer room? Boiler room? My old man uses an 87grain Vmax, however its never been used on a deer, so i cant comment on its effectiveness. He uses N160 with it and lap brass. Shoots accuratly enough and is pretty good on the foxes

miffy
I tried ballistic tips on deer a few years back (in .308), i only shot 1 red hind and it went to the truck in 2 pieces. I shot it at the base of the skull and took its head clean off but for a piece of skin. Ballistic tips are superb but not if you want to eat much of whqat ya shoot, I would have thougt that ballistic tips would not have sufficient penetration on certain deer. I shot 2 fallow a couple of months ago (100grain t mantle soft point bullets) with the nearest being only 70 yards ish, and there was no exit wound with them bullets. A ballistic tip could possibly just wound.....I personally won't use them again to shoot deer but each to their own
Guest john5
yeh you gota be carefull where you place them , i have used the same round for fifteen years , so i built up an understanding with what i am shooting , they probably aint every ones "cup of tea"
Gemini
Had this argument before, and have always kept the 70grn ballistic tips for foxes and the 100grn soft nose partitions for deer. Besides it’s nice to try and get an understanding of using the correct bullet for the correct target. And I can always use the 100grn bullet for fox if one comes along, although the same can’t be said vice-versa. There could be a hell of a mess if the v-max exploded on impact and left a terribly injured, (but not fatally  ), deer. G.M.

henry d
Several years ago I asked 5 different stalkers/high ground keepers what would they use and 4 out of 5 went for partition. 90% of there deer are red/fallow and none said ballistic tip.
