What bullet weight do you use in .223?

Recommended Posts

20 re loads are around £7 ish, but you dont save money, just shoot more! :)

thats when you exclude the £300 worth of reloading gear and use old prices ;)

most bullets round here are £25 for 100 so thats a fiver out of your £7 with powder mine with varget at @£45 a tub worked out at 16p a shot so already thats £8.20 for 20 before primers and anything for the brass

That said in the lng run ie a lifetime you will probably save money though I have severe reservations about that as you keep finding things to buy

do you need £300 worth of reloading gear to plug 1/2" holes at 100 yrds?

i wish people would give a better idea as to why they think they need all that. is it for killing paper or for stopping hearts.

I use a 222 that i reload for, i can plug 1/2"@100yrds with a lee loader and lee power scales. takes me 2 hrs to clean and load 50 rounds that will last me a long time if im in the feild or a day if on the range once a month. do i need hundreds of pounds worth of reloading gear to do get what i want from a round! i dont think i do.

I'm amazed you don't need to measure the assembled rounds, or clean the used cases, or trim the used brass to length and thats just a few bits that just keep adding to the total before you start making life easier with powder throwers etc

You can get fussy and use more kit if you choose to, but what Phil is getting at is that if money is an issue, you don't need it.

With a loader all you need to do is size a case, push fit a bullet into it with the rifle (seat it long then ram it home in the rifle, you'll extract it at chamber size dead on the lands) and then give the screw on the loader 1/4 turn to push it in just a touch more. Hey presto - you don't know how long your round is but it's matched to your gun so who cares?!

A case trimmer costs a tenner. I don't clean my brass and it shoots fine. Perhaps the primer pocket could use a rough up after a couple of firings but what's a pocket cleaner? less than £5 and it's not essential.

A scale helps to work out your powder load accurately so budget for that. But it doesn't have to be a £100+ RCBS to do the job well enough.

So under £100 gets you set up with all that kit new. Used you could maybe get it for half that? Time is free - the amount of money you spend to save your time is up to you. I've spent a lot more, but that's because I'm lazy, want to get it done and use a lot of rounds sometimes. :good:

EDIT... And more importantly I didn't want to reload to save money, I just liked doing it.

You can make serious savings on premium ammo. When people shoot Prvi and are happy with it they will not save a lot, but if they want to shoot a Barnes TSX, Nosler Partition or other high end bullet then the savings can be huge. Take my .338WM - factory premium ammo can cost £70/20! Over £3 per round. Home loaded with the same bullet will cost me half that, which is still a lot but not anywhere near as bad.

Regarding the V-Max in .22-250. I think the extra velocity may make the bullet far more explosive than it would be from a .223? It's good to knwo that they still hold together mind, which would mean something lighter should be ok in my rifle.

I shot two with one bullet a while back! They were standing nearly touching and perfectly positioned. I couldn't resist it and neither one took more than ten paces from where it stood. Not really a textbook shot but it worked.

Generally speaking the construction of the bullets (I use 225gr bonded SP) means that they open up so slowly that the damage to the Deer is minimal. In fact the .338 is far less messy than my .243 using 90gr Prvi.

£3 per round is expensive. I look at it as £3 per Deer plus zeroing cost, then it's not so bad. :good:

I'm still plodding my way through the 100 rounds of factory that I got on the cheap. It takes a while to fire 100 rounds through this rifle!

Keep in mind it's not a target gun like a big heavy .338 Lap, it's a lightweight sporter and you know you're using it. On a range day it will hurt you - I fired three rounds last weekend and shouldered the rifle badly on the third. I've got a bruise for my troubles and I didn't want another go!

The price of shooting it will actually go up when I home load for it. The factory ammo I got came from a dealer up north who mis ordered it (wanted .338 Lap) and couldn't sell it. It was on his shelf for over a year and then he sold it to me for what he paid for it - £125/100 posted to my RFD!:D
