Pirate of Love
Hi guys. I am new to clay pigeon shooting and have a daft question to ask:- When commencing your first round in a shoot, the referee ask, “Would you like to clean your gun”, and shooters reply, yes and fire either their first or both barrels. This may be a daft question, but why is this done? Is it to clear the oil in the barrels? Does it give you an advantage? Sorry if this question is silly, but I feel foolish to ask someone at my club. Thanks POL.

Just one of those silly quirks that some shooters want to do.

apache
When commencing your first round in a shoot, the referee ask, “Would you like to clean your gun”, Say "yes". Sit down, break the gun into it's component parts, remove a boresnake from your pocket and some spray............
Pirate of Love
Thanks guys. I am shooting DTL. I thought as much. I’ll save on the cartridges and say no!!
Frenchieboy
Why not try saying "YES PLEASE" and then asking if anyone has a couple of "Cleaning Cartridges" they can spare you!!
Vipa
this sounds like someone thinks a shotgun is the same as a rifle.... I'm with Apache on this one.... sounds like a good opportunity for a thorough strip down and clean... I'd be inclined to ask if it's ok if you wait until you have finished shooting though
huffhuff
Are you sure it's not "...would you like to CLEAR your gun?..." I think that would make more sense given the discipline. You could have one left in the tube from practice or previous round. Or, it is literally giving it a clear out, just like when some people on a sporting layout say "...can I see a pair..." The Duncan
clay shoot speak - "would you like to clear/clean your barrels?" Normal speak - "would you like to pointlessly fire two cartridges?".
