wymberley
Help, please, Guys, My almost 2 year old has started "coughing". She is fully fit, hurtles around like a Dervish on a LSD overdose, eats and does all else normally. She has been in kennels for 3 nights at a time twice in the past 5 weeks but is fully vacinated with no previous problems. The coughing is hard to describe; sometimes it sounds like whooping cough or croup but also sometimes as though she has the proverbial frog in the throat such that I wonder if she's got some grass, of which she will have a nibble, stuck. It's not frequent and usually, but not always, happens after/when she's really exerted herself and does not seem to affect her in any way. My wife has said to her it sounds like asthma but I haven't heard it like that. Any thoughts? Cheers, Phil
Greenhunter
Sounds like Kennel cough to me I'm sorry to say, Ring your vet for advice asap. Don't take her out and try to keep her from getting too excited and out of breath etc. Kennel cough is highly contagious and the incubation period sounds about right from the time she was in kennels. She'll be fine with the right treatment!! GH
wymberley
GH, Thanks, mate. Just a bit surprised as I had her vaccinated against it 4 or 5 months ago before she went into kennels the first time. Not much good on the phone - deaf - and can't pop down to the vet as stuck in the house just now which is why I asked, but will do so as soon as the delivery that I'm stuck in for is made. Before the coughing started she had brought up some phlegm so it's starting to make sense. Thanks again, Cheers, Phil
al4x
there are different versions of Kennel cough and the vaccine doesn't last long. Sounds like it to me as well, with a 2 year old dog just keep it away from other dogs and keep an eye on it. Benylin I believe you can use if it gets too bad but it shouldn't in a young dog. Mine had it at about the same age and its pretty disturbing for a couple of days then it just keeps getting better. Just don't turn up at the vets with it as you won't be welcomed, call before going and keep away from other dogs for about a fortnight. apache
There are 2 kennel cough vaccines 'Intrac' lasts for 6-9 months and 'Nobivac KC' that protects for a year. They cover the most common bacterial cause of kennel cough, but there are other bacteria and viruses that can be involved. It is quite common to see vaccinated dogs with kennel cough, but they get a much less serious form of the disease, compared to an unvaccinated dog. Think of it like the flu jab in people - it helps, but doesn't give 100% protection.
jmooney
I had the same with my Cocker. I keep him well vaccinated for it but he got it. Vet told me that the vaccine keeps it mild but they can still get it.
wymberley
Thanks, guys. Mild, no treatment unless she deteriorates. Just have to postpone the visit to the dry cleaners for a week (was going on Saturday) to be on the safe side. Cheers, Phil
