Frenchieboy
I am starting to restore my old Side by Side. I have done the barrels with Tetra Gun Blue and I am very happy with the results - I will post some before and after photos of the barrels later today! Now I want to start to restore the wood work. I am thinking about using a "Tru-Oil" stock restoration kit. Can anyone tell me if they are any good or suggest a better one to use and is anything I should watch out for while doing this restoration work please. I should add that although I am pretty good at working with wood etc, I have never taken on something like this before and don't want to spoil such a nice shot gun. Also, would it be safe to use something like "Silvo" and a soft polishing pad on my dremmel to do the action which is all engraved. Any hints, tips or advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks guys. Edited May 7, 2011 by Frenchieboy
PaulABF
Frenchie I've been using both the tru oil and the conditioner for a while now and done a few shotguns and rifles with them. The key, as with anything is in the prep work. Strip any thick varnish with nitromors, repeat if necessary, and iron out any large dings in the wood. Then it's sanding until the wood is like glass. The trick to applying tru oil is a little at a time. A few drops massaged into your palms then the wood. I normally apply about 6-8 coats leaving a day in between. To finish I use the conditioning cream to just take the high gloss finish off resulting in a slightly matt look. I use silver polish non the actions and engraving. It's easy to do, quite cheap (about £20 all in) and extremely satisfying.
vampire
Mr frenchie, you cannot go wrong with the tru oil kit and a mirror like perfect finish is easy to do as long as you have patience and follow the instructions/drying times, preperation is everything. Oh and they send a little book to help you with the kit,go for it mate i have done several now and even bought myself a chequering tool from 'ej brackley'

steve_b_wales
I never bought the full kit, but just a bottle of the oil. I found it to be excellent.

officerdibble777
I bought the tru oil onit's own,not the kit.I gave the stock and fore end of my new a400 a light rub over with a very smooth wet and dry paper I have used to semi polish car paint work (can't remember what it's called)it's so smooth it will polish glass,so using it dry it gave me a perfect surface finish to start applying the oil.I gave them a wipe with a damp cloth, let them dry then a light rub over with the oil, left them for about a week, then every day for a week did the same and the look fantastic now,see the before and after pics john

Frenchieboy
Thanks for all the info guys - Looking at all the photos it does appear that "Tru-Oil" is the way to go!
saxosim
Hiya as everyone else has said tru-oil is excellent and gives fantastic results, my father in law kindly did my sxs for me after we prepped it and it looks fantastic took 5 light coats to get it to required finish, I am over the moon with the results planning to try the perma liquid gun blue on the barrels as the original bluing is a little thin and worn in places I would be keen to see the before and after photos of your barrels frenchieboy if you have any yet as you mentioned. Good luck with it, cheers Edited May 14, 2011 by saxosim
