col48
Hi all I have a chance at a fully trained cocker he is 2 years old and was being trained for Field trial. well the training has gone very very well but last week he squeaked. So he may be up for grabs as he will be no good for what the owner needs. he is a timsgarry cocker and i was wondering how much is he worth? i would never breed from a dog that squeaks so that is out with him. i believe he paid about £750 for him so just wondered how do you go about pricing on this ATB Colin
butcherboy
I sold a cocker that was FT standard, 2nd in first trial but he started making the occasional sound. He was sold for £1250 to a shooting man who loves him. He does everything the bloke wants and away from the pressure of the trial doesn't make a sound Hope that helps
utectok
£1k For mine you'll be lucky at £750 IMHO between 1-2 k is more Likley ?
jimmyb79
£750 is quite a price for a pup, so if that was the fair price for the breeding at the time, like Utectok, I'd expect to see a dog of good quality breeding a training going for anything up to £2k. WGD
The dog's capabilities can now be demonstrated so the breeding is irrelevant if you are not going to breed from him, and ultimately his irrelevant breeding is why he commanded the high price he did as a pup. The standard of training he has received has to be taken into consideration, but ultimately he has a fault. I would want to seem him demo'd for you, doing the kind of work you want him for, to see if he makes any noise then and, if he does, can you live with it? That will be reflected in the price. If you are happy he will do the job for you, what you are buying is a well trained gundog irrespective of the breeding and with no potential to be used at stud. On paper I would say I wouldn't pay any more than £1K for him, but you would have to see the dog and if, for example, he was like butcherboy's dog and didn't display the fault in an informal situation I may go slightly higher but not much. Much higher that £1K and you could buy a good dog with no faults for less money.

Benellimelody
Once a dog starts squeaking it generally means it will always squeak in my experience.....however the squeak is sometimes just a release of stress or confusion brought about or increased by he handler. It sounds like this dog has been trained well and the trainer knows dogs but..if not already tried - change the cast command if verbal, try stoppin the dog on the whistle straight after been cast, then recast and repeat until it sets offwithout squeaking and then let it hunt. Obviously try and calm the dog - jus suggestions and there is no real cure that is 100% effective for every dog or any dog If the dog is squeaking when been cast on non/little scented ground i think it will be worse on gamey ground but if it is only in hot situtions (~Game present, other dogs, guns etc)it might be easy to cope with as a squeak away from trials is notte end of the world. I think the dog is worth a grand going from your post but th proof will be in the pudding an defo get him demoed to see his standard and the squeak.
