kier
I Have a larson trap set it two weeks ago just caught my first Jay which atracted two magpies the same day , would it have been better to keep the jay in instead of a magpie which I have done
Ireland's Finest!
I'd imagine you'll have better luck with the magpie but mind you I've never even seen a Jay before so not sure how well they work in larsen traps.
Catamong
I've caught hundreds of magpies in my Larsens over the years but never a Jay, I'd let the Jay go after a good telling off, they don't do any real harm, and keep the next maggy that you catch. The bigger, noisier cock birds work best, they definitely seem to attract more birds. Look after it like a pet with daily food and water, if possible raise the trap up above ground level on a bale or something similar, that stops other birds from pacing all round the trap, it encourages them to get on the top, and into the catch compartment. Browning
I'd let the Jay go after a good telling off, they don't do any real harm Rubbish! A jay will do just as much damage to eggs and nestlings as a magpie, just less conspicuously.

tikka tom
jays are just as bad as magpies. and keep the cock magpie in your trap there a lot louder and bigger

peanut38
Ive seen Jays being mobbed by Tits when nest robbing. My mate saw a Jay poking it's head inside a Tits box a few weeks ago, trying to get the chicks. Edited July 1, 2011 by peanut38
Alycidon
Had getting on for 60 maggies this time, about 20 crows and a fox !!. Never caught a jay. I would kill the jay for sure and keep the maggie. If you do get a crow in keep it as well in the same trap as it attracts other crows. Just reduces your trap capacity. Quite often when you catch a crow you can snipe its mate with a rifle if it wont go into the trap. A
