17HMR 17g V 20G?

Recommended Posts

I have always used 17g Hornady Red Tips in my 17HMR (And get on very well with them) but when I was at the gun shop buying some ammo this week I was offered some Hornady 17HMR V-Max in 20g. As I have never used them before can someone with a little experience of them tell me what difference I might expect with them compared to the usual 17g Red Tips if I bought some to try please?

Edit: Maybe I should add that my HMR is used mainly for "bunny bashing"!

I picked up my .17hmr on tuesday and unfortunately my rfd had now 17gr in stock so I took a couple of boxes of 20gr hollow points. They seemed to shoot fine and group well. I picked up some 17gr V max today and tried it,6 clicks down and 6 left had it bang on at 65 yards and have to say they shoot much better in my Sako quad. See my post the other day asking the same question it appears the main prob with the 20gr from those in the know is lack of bullet expansion and over penetration causing more runners.

Thanks for the advice and answers guys. It looks like I would be better sticking to my Hornady Red Tips in 17g - I have never had any issues with them and they do just about all that I want them to! I was asking more out of interest than anything and my question has been well answered! :good:
