Jon-Boy
Hi Chaps, being an ex cabinet maker, im thinking about making small trinket boxes on the side. This box was hand made by myself and was wondering what you all thought of them and how much you think i could sell them for. The wood is burr walnut and is french polished Thanks in advance for your opinions, be honest boys!! stupidsalmon
Very nice boxes jon, could tart them up even more by filling the notches of the letters with a suitable transluscent colour filler,......just and idea,........ :*) i'll get my coat  Cheers ss
Cranfield
That certainly looks very nice. The real question is, how much would you have to sell them for, to make a reasonable profit ? It might be better to sell them "to order".
beatingisbest
if you said how much they cost to make. Then we could get an idea, if you know what i mean, the minimum sale price.
Jon-Boy
the letters will be inlaid with box wood (yes box wood).Havent had time to cut out the letters (takes alot of patience!) Before i say how much i think they should sell for i want some unbiased opinions from you guys to see how much you would expect to pay for one in the shops. Just remember though they are not factory produced articles they are are handmade and very high quality. Jon-Boy
well thats what im thinking along the lines of, shotgun cases etc, they are very cheap to make but take alot of time to do... thats what will bump the price up a little. they make nice little presents for birthdays etc. But i like the choke box idea... elaborate futher, what should they look like etc, hold how many etc etc ? Hold differing amounts of chokes Standard hold 4 chokes and a Choke key Then for Competition shooters holds 6 all the way through to say 10 perhaps and a key make the inside (bottom and inside lid) like Corrugated roofing shape to stop the chokes rolling about. A block of wood (drilled out to choke size in a row) then cut perfectly down the middle and lined with felt. Place these in a nicely made box with a simple snap latch to hold shut and then when the chokes are sat in one half and the lid closed they should be snuggly held 4 chokes and the key should fit in a box about 6" long 3" wide and about 2" deep Beauty is the simplicity as i say the choke holders only need to be drilled cut then felt lined. They should simply glue into a premade box of said dimensions and there you go LG Edited April 14, 2006 by Lord Geordie
Jon-Boy
comon guys how much you reckon, dont worry about insulting me, i need honest to god opinions?
Lord Geordie
There is a WIDE range of prices about from £5 right the way through to £300 i can find online for handmade jewelery boxes. Why not take a few samples to a local jewelery store and see what they say?? Offer them a small commision for each box they sell?? Are there any craft fairs on near where you live?? you could go to the craft fair and sell them i would't think a table at the fair would be too costly. Make a range of Jewelery boxes trinket boxes cufflink boxes etc and see how they go. As for the Choke boxes i would be willing to pay about £15 to £20 for one made of a nice wood and lined with felt A nice built Lined and segregated gun case should fetch around £50+ LG Edited April 14, 2006 by Lord Geordie
Cranfield
What are the dimensions of that second box ? It could be the same size as the first one, but it looks bigger. I have also had a Google about for handmade boxes (jewellry etc) and there is a wide variety of choices. I would suggest to bring it into the Birthday/Christmas/Anniversary present range it would have to be between £20 and £50. There are a lot of real wood cheap imports about. Jon-Boy
second box is smaller, both are around 6" x 4" 3" tall I was thinking around the £40 average mark could make around 20 a week no problem, its just where to sell them
Cranfield
What would be a good idea, would be to have a range of boxes for different purposes. That gives you a wider variety of outlets. I shouldn't imagine that many jewellry boxes are sold in a week. You already have a trinket/jewellry box and a suggestion for a choke box, now you need some more ideas. Cigarette boxes are not really PC any more. I got a very nice 8"x4"x4" (I think) wooden box for my Springers ashes, which cost me £70 from a Pet Crematorium Co (you can bet it didn't cost them £70). Fly boxes.....float boxes.......fishing tackle boxes...... lockable ammunition boxes for a vehicle..... Other people must have some more ideas. Firm up on your price, get some idea of postage costs and you might find a buyer or two on here, for an engraved trinket box.
milo_05
Dad being an antique dealer, its some quite nice wood, look a bit like felt lined tea caddy's. I'd say you could sell them for a 100 as a special jewelrey box present. Like the choke case idea!
Jon-Boy
there are a few who willing to pay for one but not many, i have to be realistic. not blowing my own trumpet but they are worth every penny of £100 as so much time and effort goes into each one and they will last forever. The trouble with making "one off's" is that you need to charge a fortune to make it worth while and not many people are willing to pay it. If i can make them in batchs where i can speed the contruction process up by using jigs etc, i can sell more at a lower price.
